Can anyone suggest a reasonably priced, bright head torch for amateur mechanics?

The cheap one I have at the moment is not very bright.

I use a Petzl one for 24-hour marshalling/camping/walking through woods...and also for working in awkward places on the car/computer.

I bought the Petzl Aktik.

Here's a link to their product list, but these tend to be out-doorsie type devices rather than mechanic-wear. Sealey do some mechanic's head torches too.

You might find some hiking/outdoor ones are a bit too bright and focused when using it at fairly close range.
My Petzl Tikka (no longer made looking at that link above) has a diffuser lens you can flick up to spread the light a lot more and that's really useful when using it to look at something fairly close. My wife has a much more powerful Silva usb charged one which is great for running but too tight a beam for looking at things up close.

Some of the other models have variable beam width & brightness options (e.g. 1 central, 2 side, or all 3).

Come to think of it, the little Energizer one I had before (predecessor to this version I think) wasn't that bad, except for the foam padding on the torch back coming off within 6 months of light use.

Thanks - that energizer one at 12 quid might be what I need.

Spotted this the other day, haven't bought it myself yet though so can't comment on quality, etc.

I have found this works fine 3 AAA batteries and can be dimmed if required.
