Good story but how would the police know where they were? Triangulation off cell towers? Or can they track a phone's GPS?

The turn around wouldn't be that quick.

The number may have been in police intelligence / information systems.

Pretty sure the SOS function in iOS sends your location data to the emergency services. I know if you have it configured to alert a contact as well it will also send them your location.

As Geeks said If the phone was an iPhone then it will send your current location as part of the sos call
