There's a bit of a stink kicking off about the quality of some meals being provided to children. Children who fit in the right benefits group are allowed to receive free school meals - but as they are now at home, the government has been tasked with providing them food at home.

Apparently this was 3 days worth of food for one family (paper bags are apparently small amounts of raisins):

And this was 10 days for one child:

Chartwells are being blamed for much of this - owned by Compass, who recently had a chairman called Paul Walsh (Conservative donor) - you can see where the left wing social media is going with this. However, this isn't right.

I think that they should have probably given them a couple of tins of tomatoes as well...

Let’s face it the cost of delivering the food will far outweigh the cost of the items.

Was there a voucher option?

But you have companies like gousto set up to deliver 8 meals for 2 people for £35. Granted they probably couldn’t scale to do this as well. But companies like compass who are set up to deliver vans of food to caterers daily are always going to cock it up.

People were always going to complain unless they had a hot meal delivered to their child daily.

Very balanced nutritional meal there.

This is PH though, no one cares about dodgy contracts being given out to mates of the Tories and public money being spaffed up the wall. They will complain about furlough though laugh

Then you have to question why a company like compass were awarded the contract if they don’t have the necessary systems and infrastructure in place to deliver.

Was this contract put out to tender or simply awarded? scratchchin

£30 for less than a fivers worth of food. Hardly surprising people are going up the wall.

Left wing posters claim it was simply awarded. I'm awaiting some fact-checking information on this. For example, left wing posters are claiming the difference between the 30 pound per child and the 5 pound cost of the goods means 25 pounds profit. Paul Walsh is also no longer the chairman of Compass, and did he even know about this process... etc.

Its an absolute disgrace.

These food parcels are supposed to be lin lieu of free school meals (they are not intended to feed a family, just the kids). Being generous, there is £5 worth of food in the boxes people have received.

Often a school dinner is the only decent meal some kids will get.

There is a scumbag somewhere making a large profit from this.

It would have probably been cheaper to get someone like gusto, Hello Fresh or one of the veg box providers to make up food boxes and deliver them.

Before anyone says the parents should try harder or get a better job etc. fk off. Its not the kids fault they are in this situation, and its the kids who will suffer.

Chartwell has responded to one photo

“Thank you for bringing this to our attention, this does not reflect the specification of one of our hampers. Please can you DM us the details of the school that your child attends and we will investigate immediately.“

Hamper is doing quite a bit of heavy lifting in this context isn’t it?!

Perhaps there was a £25 wicker hamper out of shot to explain the expense of their paltry offering?

Because Compass have the contract to feed kids at school. There probably isn't a different contract in place.

Certainly for the schools that my wife has financial responsibility for, it is the same catering supplier supplying the meals in school and the FSM provisions for use at home. Unsurprisingly, the latter are crap because they are not set up to deliver individual portions for use at home.

Vouchers are the way forward.

I think you have to understand why good ole fashioned food vouchers were abandoned before you make a statement like that.

That does seem the simplest explanation, but even allowing for them being "large kitchen supply" level distributors, that's an impressively crap output for £30.

Be interested to see what their own example of what should be supplied looks like.

There should be no profit on contracts like this. They should be awarded to charities / food banks. I don’t see why they need to be delivered to the families either? Are there food banks in every town and city now? Just direct the funding straight to them job done.

But the food banks are not setup to procure and supply out meals either? They are defined by being zero cost, surely?

They haven't supplied any photos of what should be included.

For context, this is what Morrison's will provide you, right now, to feed a family of four five times for £30:
