So that's what the summer looks like - feels like a lifetime ago now!! Very cool indeed!

How come no insulation is ever fitted under the pool/against the sidewalls to stop heat bleed into the surround ground, is it just not worth it compared to what gets lost to the air?

Yeah not sure. The walls were just backfilled with soil/stones. They did put some insulation down before they fitted the liner, however i think this was more to make sure that the liner wasn't getting laid onto anything sharp as opposed to considerations for heat retention.

How come ground sourced heat pump? You appear to have the garden for it.

We’re a bit "garden proud" ...and a ground source heat pump would have meant digging up huge swathes of the garden. Opted for the air source heat pump as a semi eco solution.

Looks great for the summer, but will you get much use out of it the rest of the year?

Water meter?

I got a rebate for the waste water portion of the bill when I told the water company I'd filled a pool.

Should be able to run it through beginning of May - Mid October.

Yes we are on a water meter but have private drainage.
I estimated it cost about £300 to fill up.

Good one you OP

I've got a pool (only 10 meters and know where near as fancy as yours) and so many people are negative about them and cost to run and value of the house, blah blah, but fk 'em!

Mine costs about £750 - £1,000 a year to run I reckon, that's fk all really and considering we couldn't have a holiday last year was pleased to have it.

Glad you put the heater a good distance from the pool as they can be a bit noisy at times.

Looks great.

How are you finding the ASHP in terms of maintaining water temperature? Have you got a boiler as a back up?

Mine’s run off an oil boiler and the plant could with with renewing so wondering whether to go for an ASHP at same time.

I only have a heat pump to heat my pool. It's slow (75,000 litres) and you need consistent hot weather to get the best out of it, once the pool is up to temperature it does keep it warm. If the weather gets really good our heater comes on at 8 and clicks off again at about noon as the pool is up to temperature and has gained what it's lost over night.

Thanks, no regrets here! We were only able to run the pool for 3 weeks (mid sept - 5th Oct) as temperature dropped to near zero and we had weeks of rain forecast. The whole family used it every day (multiple times per day) when it was running.

We can’t wait to fire it up again. It will be like having a new pool again this year.

Great stuff. I remember my first swim in my very own pool - i really felt that I had made it rofl

Can I give you a bit of advice? Dose it next month with a load of liquid chlorine, as days get longer and temperatures start to rise algae will start to bloom, if it goes really green - don't worry, you'll be amazed how quickly it clears up.

Also, don't be tempted to open it too early, I did my first year as we had a nice weekend in early April, the days weren't long enough and there wasn't enough heat to get the pool warmed up, I ended up having a pool to maintain for a month and got bugger all use out of it, not to mention the waste of money on chemicals etc.

We were lucky with the weather the first week the pool was running (mid Sept) so the heat pump got the pool from 17c to 30c in about 3 days. As we got into the first week in October , we did have to run the pump 24/7 to keep the water at 30c.

We don’t have any other backup. It will just cost more to run when temperatures are lower.

Electricity for the 3 weeks it was running cost £270. Im thinking a fair amount of that was getting the pool up to temperature. The temperature during the nights in early October also dropped down to 3c, so expected it would take some effort to sustain 30c!
