Recommend a numpty a laptop.
Discussion
Hi all,
I need a new laptop, maximum budget around £350.00 (Give or take)
I don't play any games, just basically browse the web, go on faceache, You tube, Pistonheads, BBC News etc.
Ideally it would be 15.7" but a 14" one would suit too.
I have around a thousand family photos on one drive so if I decided to buy a chromebook would I still be able to access those?,..... although I probably will end up with one running windows 10.
As I said, I'm a numpty, so please don't baffle me with science...
(The reason i'm changing is I have an Acer which still works fine, but it fell over on the carpet, as I have a bad habit of standing it on it's end open when I get up to make a brew and one of the hinges has snapped so I can't close it without cutting through the delicate wires, and it's not financially viable to repair it as it is around four years old, so it's done OK)

not particularly a fan of sending links to Currys PC World, but this one probably fits your bill ...

Most at that sort of price point these days tend to have SSD hard disks which have plenty of advantages, but are also limited in capacity, so if you want to store loads of pictures on the device (make sure you back them up somewhere), then this looks teh best bet.

I had a Acer Aspire One and the hinge broke and the case cracked .
I bought a replacement with a good case from Ebay for £ 35 and swapped the hard drive allowed me to keep win7.
I know I am a Dinosaur.
Cheers for that, but I think I'm due a new one anyway after four years.I bought a replacement with a good case from Ebay for £ 35 and swapped the hard drive allowed me to keep win7.

I have bent and superglued a couple of angled flat brackets to the underside and top to hold the screen firmly in an open position, I know it's a bodge, but other than not closing it still works fine, but that's no good long term.

That one looks fine, but seems to be out of stock. It's within my budget though. Thanks.https://www.currys.co.uk/gbuk/computing/laptops/la...

£350 will get you a mid to low range Chromebook, looking at your usage it would be suited, do you want to keep the photos on the drive? (you will be able to access them) or you could send them all up to Google serves on Google Photos (or do both)
I suppose I might as well leave them on one drive. It's not costing me anything,Can I access them just to look at them from a Chromebook?

Wacky - I would advise you to get a small SSD over a larger non-SSD. The difference a SSD makes is immense.
Then just buy an external drive for your files.
Totally agree, I have replaced the hard drive with a cheap SSD in two "unusable" laptops and they now work perfectly. My current laptop is an 8 year old B960 and with the SSD it boots up in under ten seconds. Then just buy an external drive for your files.
I would personally go for an AMD Ryzen 3 or Intel i3 if you can.
Something like this, it also has an HD screen.

I could have written the OP a few weeks ago. I have an old HP Spectre convertible laptop thats been having issues.
I considered chromebooks and some other options but ended up with this

Its an 8 year old Macbook Pro thats been upgraded to 16GB of memory and a 1TB SSD drive, including delivery I paid £315. I added a cheap adapter so I can connect it to a HDMI input and still was way under your budget. Mine is absolutely immaculate and even came in the original box.
Build quality and the user experioence in general is fantastic, automatic keyboard backlighting, a lovely to use trackpad. Objectively the screen is poor by newer laptop standards at only 1440x900 but its more than acceptable IMO.
I'll also add that installing windows 10 was an absolute breeze, the hardest part was paying for a key but the bootcamp assistant app made it very simple to get Windows up and running if so desired.
This is PH so I'll finish with a tenuous car analogy, Id rather be driving an 8 year old 6 cylinder BMW than a new Corsa

have to say, refurb or not, and not getting into the whole Mac v Microsoft thing, the quality of the HW on mac is brilliant, my daily work laptop is a 6 year old macbook air that is still going strong. been used every working day of those 6 years too and still looks like new (if a little grubby) I considered chromebooks and some other options but ended up with this

Lots of suggestions here as well: https://www.pistonheads.com/gassing/topic.asp?h=0&...
OK, update time.
Firstly, thank you very much to everybody who took the trouble to reply, I did read them all, as I said, I only wanted a fairly basic laptop for web browsing, don't play games etc, so I settled on this for £229 from PC World. So far, I am 100% happy with it, and it didn't break the bank.
It's a very smart lightweight laptop.

Nice. Should do everything you mentioned in your original brief. You can add OneDrive to the Files app of Chrome OS so as to easily access and navigate any files / folders you have on OneDrive.
But personally I still think it's easier to just use the online/web version of OneDrive.

If you have a Gmail address/account, put them in the Drive account which comes with it; if you have a Hotmail/Live/Outlook.com email address, use the corresponding OneDrive account.
