Import from Germany to UK, who pays VAT, duty ect?

Sorry if this is the wrong forum (mods please move if it is)

I'm trying to get a Solar inverter sent from Germany to the UK under warranty replacement.

The company who the warranty is with are saying I need to give them a vat or EORI number before they send it out.

I can get one of these from the company who will install it but who is responsible for the VAT, Import charges or whatever else they will try to stick on it?

Use GBPR as the number if it is for private, ie non-commercial use.
