Just a quick question really.

Wondering if anyone can offer me any suggestions as to why, during normal driving both in town and out of town, the oil temp gauge on the dash keeps just dipping slightly. It's supposed to sit at 100 as standard, but just periodically dips to 90 odd, then returns back to 100 a while later.

I've recently had a new thermostat to try and fix it, and although the old thermo was apparently totally destroyed, it's still doing it. I know it sounds minor, but I don't remember it doing it when I first got the car just over a year ago, and although I've not done any detailed experiments I'm sure I'm not getting as good MPG as I was.

Any ideas?

Did you replace both thermostats? When I had a 535d it had a main and an EGR thermostat. The EGR one you can replace and bleed yourself easily.

Can you check the oil temp sensor it self, in case that is having any issues (resistance etc with heat)?

It's had a whole new EGR since I bought it just over a year ago, so I assume that one is also fine...

It's in the garage now for some brake pads, and I've asked but apparently it's very difficult to get at the sensor to check it... I've asked him to see if there are any fault codes but not heard yet.

So, done some more driving and it is still happening. Seems particularly prevalent when slowing down from cruise speed, and seems to idle at about 85-90 degrees when stationary. Always used to sit steady at 100.

Question really is, is this anything to be concerned about, and something requiring further investigation, or is it normal?
