Buying car from dealer but private plate still live

I have just helped my Neighbour retain a Plate. Bog standard Plate that happens to contain the Initials of his Children.
When done online, it is instant.
He got the retention Certificate within a few Days.
It must be taxed or SORN (Max 5 Years) to remove the Plate

I would guess if you buy the Car, the Plate is yours.
£80 to remove it. Is it likely to be worth anything? You usually get the original Plate back.
