Anyone on here following the debate regarding this historic race?

http://forums.sailinganarchy.com/index.php?/topic/...

This race was first instigated by the RWYC in 1925 and the cup was put up by a member with certain conditions that the race started and finished in Plymouth ... or did it?

Finishing the race as proposed by RORC, in Cherbourg, may make sense financially but isn't the original course, and I can sympathise with those who are dead against this!

Anyone entered this year?

Did four of these, last one 2015.

What is the reason for finishing at Cherbourg?

Facilities/larger number of marina berths = allows greater number of competitors able to compete in a race which is heavily oversubscribed. And of course money/support from cherbourg which Plymouth could not match. Got a rorc email last week which said something like 400 boats had entered which would form a 5km line if nose to tail - most popular offshore race in world. Guess the real question is how many people who actually do the race - would not enter due to change of destination port? Judging by entries received this year it has not made much difference - although for UK sailors it's a bit of a drag after the race having to sail home.

Did 2019 race - st cold wet windy weather - bumpy Irish sea - lack of sleep - vinegar coloured piss greeting you on the floor as you opened the heads door...but...the feeling as you come into Plymouth with dolphins at the bow - the first of many beers at the bar after - feeling of achievement etc - sort of tempted to do it again - would not have to do quaifying races as did Caribbean 600 last year - but no question that doing a couple of the prep races just to acclimatise to boat/crew would make sense. I wonder due to covid etc how many qualifying races will be run?

I'm quite sure the French will put on a fine 'end of race' celebration and Cherbourg has the space to accommodate the projected number of finishers. AIUI the race will still commence from Plymouth so that will be a challenge for all concerned and crews needing to return there after a gruelling race will not welcome bashing back down the channel, I would imagine!
With the continuing Covid situation this years' event might not be possible anyway?

Thanks for the clarification. Must admit I missed that with all the discussion about finishing in Cherbourg!

Feel sorry for Plymouth as this was a prestigious event for them to host, but money talks!!

It's their own fault, the reaction from the town was one of indifference / taking it for granted and no-one really seemed to be sponsoring the event.

I feel more sorry for all the South West regattas in August (Dartmouth, Falmouth etc) that used to get lots more entries in Fastnet years as boats took the advantage to enter the regatta whilst the boat was down there anyway.
