what's the difference really, between Michelin pilot 4s, 4, super sport and cup 2. there are a few quid difference between the lot so is there any real difference? oh and just out of curiosity what is the bit in brackets mean when it says the size and (100) or (96) as that seems to make a couple of quid difference sometimes too. Cheers

100 or 96 refer to load index. The load index indicates what weight the tyre can reliability support. XL (xtraload) can carry more weight than the normal version, but usually needs more air pressure too.
XL doesn’t mean that the tyre is necessarily reinforced, just that it has been tested at a higher load.

You need to look at your tyre pressure label or in your handbook to figure out whattyre size load index you need.

Regarding the various tyre versions, I don’t know, but I do know there are runflat and non runflat versions of Michelin’s, so be sure you are getting the ones you want.

4S is the replacement for the pilot super sport
4 is the evolution of the “standard” pilot sport range

All 3 of these 4/4S/Super sport are predominantly road tyres with the 4S/Super sport the more performance orientated.

Cup tends to be more track focused and not so suitable for year round/rain etc.

There tends not to be much overlap in sizes between 4 and 4S.

I have both 4 and 4S on my two cars and both sets are brilliant. Personally I wouldn’t grab the super sports now unless they were a fair bit cheaper (still a great tyre though). And unless it’s a track car or sunny summer days only type affair then may be best to avoid the cups. Having never had a set though I may well be completely wrong.

So 4s is better than super sport? then why are super sports dearer? Generally with any product, the dearer the better on the whole? Not arguing, just confused..

Ok cool, I didn't know that regarding load... but I know runflats are 30 quid dearer for an unbearable ride, but thats a matter of opinion, but i won't be buying those. I was just curious as to the difference between the above specs, bare in mind there is 15 quid difference between the lot

As I understand it, the PS4 is the natural progression of their all round performance tyre. I’ve had pilot sports in all iterations and they have been my go to tyre for nearly 20 years.

PS4S is a step up and supersedes the pilot super sport and has made the tyre generally more useable. The MPSS was a hard side walled tyre that needed a fair amount of temperature to get the best out of it. In general UK conditions I found it to be pretty useless but in the summer it was a very sticky tyre. Not a tyre I will liked at all owing to its lack of diversity.

The Cup tyre is a step up again and is purely a performance orientated one and best left to track/summer use cars unless you’re happy to suffer the rest of the time.

Brilliant great tip. I'm running PS4S now which seem really good, so to sum up, stick with those. Cheers for all your tips

4S has replaced the super sport and is the better of the two. As to why it’s more expensive I have no idea - I was as equally confused when buying mine! I guess they are using up old stock or the cost price of the 4S is lower?

You'd have thought the super sport would have been cheaper then? who knows...Any way i get the idea of the pecking order of these tyres now regardless of the pricing., Very interesting
