ipad insurance

AppleCare isn’t a con. But, read Ts & Cs well before buying.
Phone your house insurance company yourself and ask them. Too many variables for anyone else to advise via a forum.
I wouldn’t go with a 3rd party seller.
I have gone off John Lewis over the years. Their customer service is, too often, below that of competitors. They just don’t seem to care.

Applecare is pretty good, just be aware it is extended warranty (unlikely to need it on an iPad as they tend to be very reliable) and accidental damage not a full insurance policy so no loss or theft cover. With Apple at least if you do claim you get a quick resolution and official parts/replacement device. Some gadget insurance policies can take ages to turn a claim around and might not use oem parts, which can cause further issues.
Have a look at the Apple stores refurbished section. I got my mother an iPad Air that was good as new and with AppleCare for about the same as a new unit alone.
John Lewis give an extra years warranty for free but accidental damage is extra.
An official screen replacement without cover is really expensive on the air as the digitiser is part of the same unit. The device is pretty close to being a complete write off. That said iPads are fairly robust, especially if in a case. I manage a few hundred used in schools and we see less than 1% with smashed screens in any given year.

thanks - most worried about accidental damage tbh ie screen cracked
For use by kids around the house we've got five iPads of various ages in this kind of case: https://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B07Y9YNHNP/ref... . They've used them on planes etc too.I will say there's a difference between the cases over the years - the later ones feel less substantial.

just checked with home ins and its 400 excess so after some cheapy gadget insurance - any recommendations? yes will get a case etc but its a fragile looking thing
Have you got any 'premium' bank accounts that come with accidental damage cover?Otherwise there are plenty of the 'protect my gadget' type offers out there.
e.g. (not an endorsement, just some examples I found)
And decide if you need damage only or theft/loss cover too.
