Impressed with new Autoglym
Discussion
Just thought I'd let you know....
I used to use Autoglym Super Resin Poilsh and then sometimes the Ultra Gloss Protection to finish it off and was always fairly happy with it.
This weekend I tried the new "Ultra Deep Shine" polish and it works really well, giving a brilliant finish without needing a top coat wax - I'd recomend it to anyone, especially those with darker colour cars!

Warning! Autoglym has semi-abrasive agents in it. IIWY i would ditch it get some 100% pure wax products such as Zymol, Swissol or Meguirs.
This is especially prevalent if you have a dark (or darkish) coloured car, the semi abrasive agents will cause swirl marks over short periods of time.

The question is Kevin - do you have a nice new car to polish yet?????

I agree! I used to swear by AutoGlym products but after a lot of research when buying my first new car a few years back I found that it wasn't good to use all of these products. It is much better (especially with modern thinner paint) to use natural products such as the Swissol kits (which I use). Not only that Swissol is much easier to apply and leaves absolutely no dust when buffing off and will not leave white polish marks in all the cracks like AutoGlym will do if you aren't careful!
Swissol can be bought through agents for Swissol. One guy who advertises around a lot of car club forums (SEATcupra.net, Scooby Net etc.) is this guy: www.autoshinespecialistvaleting.co.uk/swissol.htm
I'm not sure if he has an offer on PistonHeads but you may be able to get 10% off with him if you say you saw his discount offer on SEATcupra.net.
I would go for one of the Entry kits. They seem expensive but the expensive part is the wax which will last for years (I've been using mine for a couple of years now and have over 3/4 of the tub left!). Different waxes are better for different kinds of paint, drop the guy and email and ask his opinion. I bought my kit originally for my black SEAT Leon Cupra R and got Saphir wax. I now use it on my Chameleon Green T350c and it still does an excellent job. I would also ask about adding a clay bar (Paint Rubber) to the kit as it has proved very useful to me. It will remove and crud from the paint before you start the cleansing and waxing process. Here is a quote from the Swissol website: "Paint Rubber is a mineral-based putty compound that will gently remove deposits from the paint surface without harming the paint itself. Paint Rubber effortlessly removes paint overspray, environmental and industrial contaminants and leaves an ultra smooth painted surface. Apply before Cleaner Fluid (saves time and effort)."
I think Zymol products are sold in a similar way, through agents. I don't have any experience with Zymol stuff but I am sure it is equally as good.

You are correct, the AutoGlym Extra Gloss Protection does not contain any abrasive "stuff" it is just a liquid you put over the top to "protect" the finish. Do not use it with a wax though as it will eat into it! It is interesting that AutoGlym don't actually have a wax in their product range, it is just polish and cleaning products.
In my experience the Extra Gloss protection isn't a touch on a decent wax!
I have also used the Zymol cleaner wax (the blue stuff you can get from Halfords) in my search for a decent product to make my black car look nice (those who have owned a black car will know all too well how hard it is to keep looking nice). In my experience It is ok, but does contain quite a harsh abrasive (it states on the bottle that it should be used a maximum of 4 times a year!!). Other than the abrasive it contains it also creates a lot of dust and leaves white polish in the cracks which is hard to get rid of. To create a good finish with it you also need to spray water onto the newly cleaned surface and re-buff. A lot of work!
In my experience you can't beat the quality and ease of use of something like Swissol (and possibly the proper Zymol wax kits not the stuff you get in Halfords). You can apply the Swissol wax as often as you like.

so what would you recommend nick? i have a nearly new car that i washed then treated with extra gloss protection. should i polish this off (and with what)and replace with a natural wax like swissol or zymol?
I'm not saying the Extra Gloss Protection is bad, just not as good as other products IMHO. Leave it on there, but don't try using it to seal in another wax as it wont work (I asked this question myself a couple of years ago as I used to use the extra Gloss protection). I have to admit I haven't used many of the Meguiar's products so can't comment on them but this is my personal recommendation:
I would say get yourself a Swissol Entry Collection (www.swissol.com/E/GB/Produkte_Entry.htm). As I mentioned above you can get this from an agent, one of which I have given a link to above. Swissol do a large range of different waxes suited to different situations so drop Swissol or the agent an email or give them a call asking which wax they recommend for your paint. I would also say get yourself a "Paint Rubber" (www.swissol.com/E/GB/Produkte_Lack2.htm) to go with the kit.
Once you get the kit start using it straight away! It comes with a full 60 page booklet on how to apply everything! Trust me, it is so much easier to use than anything you get in Halfords! The wax itself also smells very nice
Here are a couple of general tips I will give you for cleaning your car (not specific to any product):
1. Don't use a sponge to clean your car! Use a small towel / flannel (should come with the Swissol kit).
2. Don't use a chamois to dry the car, it leaves streaks and takes too long. Instead use a silicone "Water Blade" (available from AutoGlym and TurtleWax to name a few, can be bought in Halfords) along with an old towel to mop up the remaining water(the older ones absorb a lot more water than new ones, if you don't have an old towel (new ones are next to useless) get yourself something like this: www.meguiars.com/whatsnew/accessoryproduct_page.cfm?SKU=X-2000).
You do have to make sure that the blade is clear from any debris before running it over your paint, and also make sure that the paint is well rinsed and still wet when using it.
I hope this helps!

phew...i never knew car cleaning was so complicated!! cheers for the info.
LOL.... I have to admit I am a bit of a perfectionist when it comes to my cars (some say I am sad) and to me cleaning a car is an art form (which takes me 8 or 9 hours to do the full works!), especially with a black car which shows up every mark, especially water marks! I'm happy now not to have to deal with black paintwork.. I have nice Chameleon green paint to worry about now! Also the TVR has a lot less paint to worry about than the SEAT which is nice
I do tend to take a while to get to the point, sorry for blabbing on a bit in my reply. Hope it helps though.
