back in the days of windows 7 with various laptops I used to be able to just shut the lid on my laotop and it would go to sleep, disconnect from wifi and happily sit in my laptop bag either only used once or twice a day, or 10 or more times, it would wake in around 3 seconds, but would never get hot in my laptop bag or cause excessive battery drain.

My last 5 laptops sleep hasn't been like this since around 2014, they stay connected to wifi and they must be running more aggressively in the background as the fans keep kicking in and out and the bag can get very hot, and battery drain is quite noticable. Nothing obvious I have tried in the settings has got back the deeper sleep I used to get in my older laptops so I need to shut down and restart every time which slows me down.

Is there anyway to get back the deeper sleep older laptops used to give?

One thing I did notice, my old 2011 macbook pro on windows 7 had a deep sleep until a windows update gave it the crappy half sleep that the newer laptops have.
I currently run a 17" hp envy 4k oled i7 16gb and a 1-netbook onemix3 platinum pro i7 10510y 16gb
both share crappy sleep.
The old panasonic mk3 cf52 toughbook i lug around for win7/xp legacy tasks where I need proper onboard rs232 and a SLIP connection will happily sleep for days on a charge and still wake up no problem.
Any help would be appreciated.

I've not done this for ages as I end to turn things off completely now everything has SSDs, but are you talking about the difference between sleep and hibernate? I think one effectively leaves the machine running in a low power state, and the other turns everything off but saves a snapshot of what you are doing at the time.

Make sure in the power settings that closing the screen actually suspends the machine.
