Another boring what tyre thread
Discussion
My recently bought hypermotard 939sp is in need of a new rear tyre.
It's currently on Metzeler M7RR. The front has about 3.5mm across the full width, the rear is on the wear bars in the centre.
My riding is going to be solely on the road, riding for pleasure and I'm not planning on any long touring. At most a couple of hundred miles on a day out to Wales etc.
I would normally just change the rear for the same again then consider changing them both next time, however I have a pair of supercorsa SP V2 sat in the garage intended for my track GSXR. Would putting a different size rear change the handling massively or make the TC throw a fit? The supercorsa is a 180/60 rather than the standard fitment 180/55.
Another option is to replace the pair with the newer M9RR, diablo rosso corsa 2 or Michelin power RS+
I know tyre choice is a subjective thing and people often stick with what they know but I'm happy to take any suggestions on the best option. The OE tyre for this bike is supercorsas but to be honest they'd possibly be wasted on me.

I ran through a few sets of SuperCorsa on my MV and then a couple of years back changed to Diablo Rosso Corsa 2. Changed the rear for another towards end of last year.
Cant say I noticed any difference in performance except I had more confidence on the DRC2 when caught out a couple of times in the rain, and the rear tyre lasted 4.5k miles instead of 2k miles. Front looks like it might last get 6-7k out of the front.
Well pleased with them and will continue using them. I just dont get the benefit of SuperCorsas for road only use.

Sorry if I wasnt clear, I'm not suggesting using miss matched tyres. If I was to go for the SC in my garage, it would be both front and rear.bogie said:

The main benefit I see for the SC is that I have them sitting in the garage already (abeit in the wrong profile).Cant say I noticed any difference in performance except I had more confidence on the DRC2 when caught out a couple of times in the rain, and the rear tyre lasted 4.5k miles instead of 2k miles. Other than that, I think I would destroy the centre of the SC in very few miles without putting any meaningful wear onto the edges. Something like the DRC2 probably suits my use case much better.

I'm a big fan of the Power RS+
Wet and dry they are a belting tyre.
I second that, but the RS has been discontinued. The equivalent (ish) tyres are now Power 5 and Power GP I think the GP is closest to RS+Wet and dry they are a belting tyre.
I replaced a 190/55 with a 180/60 which sharpened things up no end

Have you tried the GP yet?I fitted a set this year and I cant say that I like them as much as the RS+.
I was under the impression that they were fundamentally rebranded RS+ in order to move them away from the bad publicity the original RS (without the +) recieved.
They definitely didn't give me as much confidence in the wet and the grip and feel didnt seem to be on par once it started to get worn down?
It all could be in my head though? But it has made me consider trying either Dunlop or Pirelli alternatives this year.
Is the front flat spotted at all? Sometimes I find the front has plenty of tread on it but its not a nice feeling turning in with a pronounced flat section.
From the choice of tyres I'd happily run any. But I'd sway away from Michelin purely as I just don't really like the feel. Absolutely nothing wrong with them, I've a few sets sitting in the garage and will happily run them, I just think they feel a bit hard/wooden.

I've had the normal RS on my MT10 before and thought they were fantastic, not tried the plus or GP yet.
I think the logical thing to do is stick an M7RR on the rear then change both when the front is done. The front seems absolutely fine at the moment, nice and rounded with no flat spot.

I’ve got a Hypermotard 950SP on its standard fit Supercorsa SPs. They’re brilliant - encourage some proper t
ttery in summer and haven’t given me any scares on the road. I was out on Sunday to run some errands and they still hooked up well! Rode it in 2C weather in December and it was ok, though I was being fairly cautious.
Just my two cents, but they feel lovely and are surprisingly good in the current wet/cold. By the time summer arrives you’ll love them.

I always really liked M7RR, why do you want to change?
Because the rear is worn out and to be honest, the M7RR is getting on a bit, there are newer, better tyres on the market now. I'll caveat that by saying that whatever tyre I fit will be more capable than I am.TimmyWimmyWoo said:

I run supercorsas on my track GSXR 600 and my road 848 Evo so ive got a good idea of the level of grip they give on the road.

I really wanted a 950 SP but money wise I was pretty much between a new standard 950 and a used 939 SP. The extra bling sold it to me

Fair. I didn't realise there was a m9rr, but a quick google says they're good. I will try those next. Cheersairsafari87 said:

No I am just on my last set of RS+ due to the covid thing... was going to replace with GP under the impression they were an improved version... you have just thrown a massive spanner into my tyre choice
Like I say, it could have just been me? But there was something about the GP which just wasn't quite right.Someone mentioned earlier in the thread that the find Michelins a bit wooden feeling. In the case of this particular set of GP's that I've had fitted I would have to agree.
I'm about due a new rear now, but the front still has about 50% life left in it. Normally I would just fit another rear of the same type and then replace both for something different once the had worn, but I will be ditching it as soon as I put my winter bike away and get my main bike back out again.
It would be interesting to hear what other peoples opinion of them are though.
