Showing a film to kids over Teams

I’m in my lad schools PTA and we’re looking at free, non-fundraising ideas to give the kids a little something different to do of an evening. Obvious choice is to get all of them on Teams (they use it for online learning), share my screen and stream a film from Netflix/Disney+ etc.

I know I can do it, but can I do it legally? No money would change hands, it’s for 4-10 year olds and there would be about 30 kids in total (max).

I’m keen to do something different for the kids, but don’t want to end up with anything biting anyone (me!) in the arse if it were to be known that it happened.

No you can't rebroadcast someone elses content over the internet to a crowd.... the chances of anything happening to you if done on a small, non commercial scale would be miniscule though.

My mate who does the odd bit of DJing, did a set of 90s stuff on Facebook live and he got the plug pulled on him for broadcasting rights. Think it was Sky who got FB to do it.

I am reasonably confident you will find that it doesn't work anyway.

You could tell all the kids to watch a movie streamed from elsewhere and to be on Teams at the same time (and start the movie at the same time)

How about Netflix Teleparty (https://www.netflixparty.com/)? There might be a few limitations with the hardware people can use - but all out in the open with Netflix so no risk of it being shut down.

I’d be surprised if that’s something the kids would actually want to be doing ... not being funny but the evenings are theirs and correctly so.

We got a bunch of kids together a few times in the first lockdown, they are all 8 or 9 as they are a football team. The film would have them bored to tears really quickly and they would just cock about on the teams session.

One thing we stumbled across that works really well was a treasure hunt. I knocked up a few slides with items they needed to grab around the house, kept them amused for ages, the competition element was interesting and you can screw over the parents if you want to get a little risky with the chosen objects.

Cheers guys. If there’s an element of potential ‘no-no’ with it, it’d be shot down pretty quickly, so think we’ll knock on the head!

Treasure hunt sounds really good! We’ve got a Teams call with the PTA tonight to look at some ideas so I’ll mention that, thank you .

They’ve not seen each other face to face for a while outside of a lesson so sort of just want to find an excuse for them to have a bit of a free-for-all

The idea of parents or some arm of a school organising "fun" activities sounds absolutely dire. Just let them play them do whatever they want in their own time.

Ignoring any legal stuff I’d say a camera pointing at the screen and video calling it or YouTube live stream

It’s automatic using content match. Here’s what you do for youtube;
get all your intended tracks, record them and upload the video as private with a future release date. Youtube will flag songs - some will be “cant be monitised” and some will simply be blocked - for the ones that are blocked you remove them from your dj playlist and assuming you dont care about monitisation you play the rest. I did this for a three hour set, but it took me many days beforehand uploading and sorting everything out.

I would be surprised if most kids don't have Netflix anyway?

So not sure i really see the point, and doubt many will want to watch what you choose.....

We used to get away with a bit more using Instagram for some reason but just use mixcloud now and link to it.
