My journey to the ultimate super saloon
Discussion
Thought I'd try my hand at sharing my journey after a suggestion I do a progress thread. Also reading so many interesting stories on here time I tried to give something back.
Firstly my last car prior to 2017 was a 2002 E46 325ci. After changing jobs and having to go self employed to work offshore in 2013. I decided to sell the Beemer and buy and run a van through the business. Various vans and a Ford Ranger later It's 2017. This was a particular crap year for me and I started to question why am I doing this. I decided I needed a toy in my life again, a reminder of why I make the sacrifice of being away from my family for half the year.
The journey begins with a fair bit browsing and what do I fancy. Spotted a Vegas Yellow S3 from an independent about 40 miles away. Always been a 3 door hot hatch man. loved the colour.310bhp facelift 0-60 4..5....I got carried away with stats on this one. When I enquired it turns out it was a member of the family's car. 3,500mls. Absolutely mint. Deal done. Back in the fold.

18 months into ownership, really like the car. Circumstances at work changed, and I came onshore for a year. The commute and use the car for work was breaking my heart. Sold it and went on to get a Ranger through the business.

Couldn't live with it. Horrible thing as a daily. Sold after 3 months and got another Transit Connect.

Cracking vans these by the way. So back offshore and I've got the car itch again. More browsing I see a rather nice 2014 Golf GTI at the main stealers. Obviously a 3 door. 36,000 1 owner. But I wanted to keep the van so persueded the wife we would trade her car for it. Easy peasy, she liked it. Deal done.

2019, 2 months into ownership. Am bored at work and scanning the classifides again. Spots a 2010 WRX STI saloon with 37,000 at a Subaru dealer about 90 miles away. Always liked these. Enquired and the salesman knew every owner all mature. Cracking car with full main dealer history. Deal done.

Such a rare sight these. Kept the for 18 months. Again bored at work I spy a 2017 C43 coupe. 1 owner 19,000 miles. Totally convinced myself this was the car for me. Blew my savings and traded the Scooby.

Lovley looker. Fantastic engine...but the interior rattled more than my Subaru FFS. Cowling round the steering wheel, center console and the stick on screen. I've only had it 2 months and WBAC were offering what I paid for it. Result. Sold
My next purchase would be a 2017 S4 from Audi Wolverhampton. 1 owner 18,000mls. Some tasty options. Virtual dash, matrix headlights, carbon inlays etc. Audi were also offering a 2 year warranty promotion. Sold. Really nice car with the Red Leather. Did the North coast 250 in her. Epic power and torque for overtaking all whilst having a message
So with no intention of selling I find myself just looking at the place I bought the Merc from as they have some nice stock usually.

Boom. They have late 2019 Alfa Romeo Giulia Quadrifolio. Convenience pack, Electric seats, Red calipers. Only 5,000mls with the remainder of the 5-3-5 in Silverstone Grey. Previous owner tastefully had the roof wrapped in carbon fibre. The colour really suits the car and quite unusual the wrap sets it off nicely I think. I've always loved these since I saw an article on them when they were released. Such a sexy and beautiful car. Anyway I went back to work trying to forget about it as it was a bit out of my range. Couldn't sleep that night for thinking about it. I think I lasted till about 10 in the morning and crumbled. Email sent. Spent the rest of the day haggling and finally closed the deal. The Audi was worth about half the quad so I just bit the bullet and financed the rest. You only live once and something's are worth sacrificing for. Could be dead tomorrow but I'd die a happy man

Some quick and rapid progression there 😂.
Think i’ve still only seen a couple of the quad’s in the flesh and certainly not in silver looks quite nice, similar to silverstone grey BMW? Either way one of these are on my list to one day tick off they just look bloody great. Be interested to hear your thoughts on cabin quality and tech vs the audi and merc as supposedly that’s where it’s a tad behind?

They are such a rare sight. I've only seen 2 where I am. They look even sexier in the flesh. I've only had it just over a month. I've had folks taking pictures and giving me thumbs ups Think i’ve still only seen a couple of the quad’s in the flesh and certainly not in silver looks quite nice, similar to silverstone grey BMW? The S4 interior was excellent and I knew the quad wasn't going to match it so my expectations were I can live with it. TBH it's really quite nice inside. The standard seats are really comfortable and have plenty of adjustment to get you a perfect driving position. The dash is nice with the leather and stitching. Steering wheel feels nice, it's heated to. The gear paddles are lovely, really nice to touch and operate. Lower door cards are of a harder plastic but you don't go about feeling the lower door cards
same with the lower center console. The centre armrest is quite large when you open it. It can also show up indentations from your elbow on the leather as the padding underneath is quite soft. I tend to rest my forearm instead. The wheel control for the infotainment is not on a par with the Audi, but perfectly functional. As for the infotainment system itself, I find it perfectly acceptable but I mostly use Spotify and Google maps through Android Auto. Speakers are fine, sound good and don't rattle. I've only got the standard speaker. On the whole it's a nice place to be. No rattles or squeaks.
I'd trade off a few bits of plastics just for the sheer pleasure of driving it anytime. Such an epic machine

What kind of job seems to involve doing little more than sitting around bored with nothing to do than browse the classifieds, yet pays so well that you can make your way through a selection of expensive motors on a whim?
He mentions it several times!Must be hard getting any responses to “I’m on an oil rig (or whatever)....” emails.

He told you. He's offshore- away from his family half his life, possibly flying out over the North Sea by helicopter a dozen times a year. Long shifts, and when your shift is over you have time to kill as you aren't going anywhere.Brother in law does this. Missed Christmas and New-year at home because he couldn't get off the rig.
Huge uncertainty over the last two years as oil companies dumped staff. Short contracts, with the dates workers are due out and back sometimes changing at a few hours notice.
If you're jealous, apply.

I was attempting, and obviously failing, to make a throwaway humorous remark rather than expressing jealousy. Brother in law does this. Missed Christmas and New-year at home because he couldn't get off the rig.

I can definitely relate to the bored at work car browsing thing! Some tasty motors there.
How was the S4 down British back roads good fun? Or a big lump of torque with little involvement?
It wasn't specced with the sports diff. About the only option it didn't have and believe this makes a fair difference in tightening the inside wheel when on the twisties. For a big lump It had plenty of grip. Proper Quattro 4 wheel drive on these and not the Haldex sytem. P Zeros seemed to provide plenty of grip. Never quite got how the steering feedback gets slated. Nothing like the response you get from the Alfa but never left me thinking meh! I never truly explored the limits of the car as putting in a hedge usually ends up being embarrassing How was the S4 down British back roads good fun? Or a big lump of torque with little involvement?
But I can say it was fun and very enjoyable
