Been off the road a few years, it doesn't need a vast amount of work but it does need some, but with little value to the car as is and little value when done, is it worth it?
It needs (as of last MOT 5 years ago)
Brake lines
Sills welding
4 tyres (planned to put new wheels on if it passed MOT)
couple of balljoints.

It will also now need, most coolant hoses as they have gone crispy and brittle, not the end of the world, tank needs draining.

The bigger issues however lie in, I'll need to sort the rocker cover/head out as the rocker cover merely sits on it, previous owner stripped most of the threads out the head, it, whilst rarer than a 540i/6 Touring, it is a 518i Touring SE.

I loved the car, but I ended up down an E39 rabbit hole which I do sorta regret now, but with only 7 or so of these left I don't want to see it scrapped and parted out, should I just bite the bullet and work on it?

Sad to say but I'd scrap it. Unless you spend thousands, it'll never be anything more than a banger with some nostalgia. Let it go.

I didn't want to put it so harshly.

But if it has been standing for 5 years, what kind of condition is it really in?

I know it only needs a a "couple" of bits, but that can soon grow to a large amount of bits.

And sadly, although there might only be a few left, there is a reason for that, the 518i's are not the most sought after, so unless it is truly mint with very low miles it's not going to be worth very much when you have it completed and back on the road.

Having said all that, if you have the time and the inclination, get the sills done and the brake pipes, see if it will get through an MOT and take it from there.

I may have a buyer for it depending on location.
