Having said that, he's already been poisoned once and Putin has now shown the world that retiring to another country is no route to safety anyway, so if he's going to go out it may as well be with as big a noise as possible.
Of course he wouldn't be the first statesman to gain influence after a long time in Prison, but it doesn't tend to work that way in Russia.

I though Putin was at deaths door with the big C. Not heard it officially though.AFAIK his daughter is being primed.
