Dear All,

Can you help me with some useful advice?

I used Microsoft operating systems until I moved to a Mac in about year 2000! Now I have old equipment that in true mac style is still working, 2011 imac, 2015 macbook pro 13 and a macbook 12.

However, since my wife has been working from home, her work has supplied her with a new Lenovo laptop and a couple of screens. Occasionally I sit down and do some emailing with her computer. I find Windows 10 so much easier to work with, somehow the windows just make sense. Tiling work panes, so easy. The operating system just works in a more businesslike manner. Mac OS has a jumbled window structure that I find painful to navigate at times. I hate the Dock, the start bar is so much better... IMHO..

Am I the only person who, with the new M1 macbook just out, finds them self yearning to go the other way!? Thinking of a HP Spectre x360 14 or 15 or a nice Dell. Am I opening myself up to a painful realisation that I've been an idiot?

I know it's financially stupid, macs retain value so end up cheaper in the long run.

Advice please.
Jack

You prefer Windows so buy a PC.

I prefer MacOS so will buy a MBA M1 sometime soon.

I don't see the big dilemma you appear to have.

It's funny - some of what you hate about Mac (dock), I find works really well for me! Also The F3 key is the best invention ever!

I have a 6 month old Windows 10 machine and an early 2015 MacBook Pro on my desk. I'm reading PH responding to emails on the Mac before the Windows machine is even functional.

In short - to each his own.

I'm waiting for the next iteration of the MBP as I'd like to have more than just a couple of ports and not to have the touch bar.

They're the same but different.

Similar....I have a well specc’d work Lenovo I have to use for certain specific tasks, & each time I boot it up, I am reminded of many reasons I love my now-aging 2014 MBPr!
Trackpad, keyboard, near-instant boot from sleep.
The Lenovo is a Corporate build, and constantly wants to update BIOS settings, etc....slower to boot up...yada yada
I’m considering a newer M1 machine sometime, but the beast keeps doing the job!

But....if you like it, change: if nothing else, any personal IT spend will be much lower in the years ahead (although I would ask how many Windows laptops still hack it after 6+ years: I feel my annualised running costs are decent!)

The last point is so true. I'm still using a 2011 MBA (for kids homework only now), and my 2013 MBP. They really don't owe me anything. I'm sure that my next purchase (M2 or M3 CPU MPB when they're launched) will last at least as long. Apple know how to make kit that lasts and continues to perform as well as it did when new.

They both have their pros and cons.

I switched back to Windows a few years ago. Mainly cost that prompted it, and a realisation that everything that drew me to Macs 15yrs prior, Windows could now do just as well. So the choice was much less stark.

The late Airs with the M1 chip will be of interest when it comes time to change machines. They seem like good value at the moment. But we'll see.

Apple have been losing focus on the desktop OS in the last few years IMO. Lots of fanning around over things that don't matter (colours, icons etc) but making them worse (silubjectively). Not enough on things that might help (like not being quite so obstructive with devices not part of their ecosystem.

This is no surprise as the phones are where they make their money. Find it a bit sad, but things move on.

I still use both at home, but mostly Windows now.

How do you know? Surely you just let it sleep and it's back instantly?

More seriously, even on a 10 year old PC, so long as you have an SSD boot is so fast that it's irrelevant really.

The guy you are responding to admitted it's a Corporate build though, they're all st aren't they as some idiot in IT decided to install x y and z to make his life a tiny bit easier, while fking over every user. I have a brand new 16GB Surface Pro, corporate, slow as anything. My wife's corporate build is a complete nightmare because of various add-ins that fk it up. It's a daft comparison.

My only complaint with Windows these days is that I use multiple screens and Virtual Desktops to separate all my programs and projects out and it doesn't really manage that very well. They've got as far as letting me rename the desktops, but I want to be able to lock programs to particular desktops and have it keep stuff where I had them on restart. I also want it to leave apps on a particular monitor whether that monitor is connected or not. If I play games I turn all the monitors off except 1, except I don't as doing that moves 30 other programs to the one desktop!

I use both but tend to segregate my activity to Work and Gaming on the PC. Everything else on the Mac.

Not this old chestnut

If you buy an ultrabook at the same price as a Apple they last just as long. If you buy a cheap £300 windows laptop and expect it to last the same as a £1000+ apple you will be disappointed. Both are made to a price point

People who buy £300 laptops also tend to throw them around... then "oh it only lasted a year"

Not convinced on this. I’ve had many Windows machines over the years. Some high spec, some I’ve built myself. None have been all that great or long lasting.

Got a 2012 Mac Mini still going strong. Runs better than my 1 year old Dell works laptop. And by some margin.

Same here...

Currently spending a lot of time using a 2011 Mini as part of my daily setup. The 'Corporate' Lenovo experience, I have to endure alongside it, is painful, to say the least.

I have a 2010 laptop that still runs perfectly fine, as someone else said, buy a cheap st laptop and get cheap st performance. Buy a decent one and it can do everything you need, and doesnt tie you in to the apple universe or cost base.

If you like apple thats fine, but 90% of the population are probably a lot more comfortable with windows than they are with apple.

Anecdotes (from either side) aren't evidence

I find it easier to just hit the F3 button on the wireless keyboard than trying to screw with the gestures on the magic mouse.

Thanks for your replies. I installed windows on my macbook pro and I'm enjoying the change. It runs remarkably well!
