Golf R (MK7) or S3 (8V)?

Hey guys,

Welcome from Australia.

I'm in the market for a MK7 R or an 8V S3 as a fast daily that I'd like to lightly modify.

I'm pretty set on getting an S3, but from what I have read, it is less engaging to drive compared to an R. My question is, how much 'worse' of a drivers car are they?

Have also considered saving a few more dollars and going for a GTI Performance Pack, but I don't want to have buyers remorse like I kinda did 10 years ago when I got a MK6 GTI over an R.

I was also considering an F20 LCI M135i/M140i, but they are a bit overpriced at the moment and the pre-facelift F20 is too ugly for my liking. I spent a week with a LCI 125i M-sport, and I did enjoy driving it.

I drove a 6 speed Golf R and then bought a 7 speed S3.

Aside the extra noise in the R I don't think I could tell the difference personally.

I think the S3 is set up a bit more for comfort, whereas the Golf R has a bit more engagement sprinkled on it. Not sure if there's a great deal in it though.I wouldn't rule out a GTI performance, as the FWD aspect can make it a bit more fun to drive.

What about a Leon Cupra? Basically a FWD Golf R with more kit as standard. Supposed to be quicker than the S3/Golf R when rolling, due to being lighter. Obviously, low speed pulls and launches are where the 4wd system shows its strengths.

I currently drive a Mk7R and think it's bloody brilliant - after a stage 1 tune and less than £750 worth of mods.

A work mate has owned both and said the Golf was the better, sportier drive, the Audi was the nicer car.

I think you're looking in the wrong direction if you want an engaging car to drive.

German cars are all rather clinical, numb and isolated. Whilst quick, I don't think a lot of them actually make good drivers cars.

In my opinion, there are so many better, more engaging drivers cars out there when it comes to hot hatches. Cheaper too.
