Good on em. They do like a fight. They were among the first to stand up to the Chinese telecoms for spyware, when most great nations were considering which position to be lying down and taking it, weren't they?
If google follow through can't aussies just use vpns?
Yes, but as China has pointed out, in no way to influence opinions at home, that australia has an awful human rights record. If google follow through can't aussies just use vpns?
Good for them, I say. Its beginning to feel that big tech are becoming big bully.
You can read the bill here rather than listen to the hysterics of the mainstream media which will of course be in favour of this undemocratic law.

It's not just that Google will need to pay for news content it's that they need to give the dominant players (Fox) preferential treatment over other news sources, only 12.5% of searches are related to news so Google will likely just delist the media companies rather than taking the drastic action of shutting down their search.
This Australian sums up why this bill a bad thing (starts about 45 seconds in)
Edit:fixed youtube link to play in browser.

"Don't be evil" seems a long, long time ago now doesn't it.
I think the Aussies should stick to their guns, let them pull out - ultimately there are other search engines/services/gadgets.
It could even start a mini boom in local search engines/services, maybe with a little government support for startups etc ?
Not necessarily straightforwards search but the add on stuff like shop opening times, public transport times/routes, you could link some search in to education syllabuses etc.
Be interesting if other regions picked up the same attitude wouldn't it. I do think Google need taking down a peg or two threats to pull out do sound a bit bigheaded.
