Hi,

I bought a full set of brake calipers from a breakers yard, with the aim to rebuild and restore them as a project for this year. I’m in no rush to get them on the car, and my main reason for doing this is to learn how braking systems work. My car is a Mk8 Honda Civic and the calipers are OEM, made by TRW.

Firstly the piston - having watched a few YT videos I understand this can be dismantled and a seal can be replaced, but I’ve never seen this clip before and my circlip pliers don’t seem to work, any ideas?

Secondly I can’t seem to figure out what type of clip is holding the handbrake mechanism in the below picture, any suggestions? It doesn’t look like a circlip at all. The image isn’t the best at showing the clip, my camera struggled to focus:

Many thanks,

Fraser

The first snap ring looks like it would prise out with a seal pick or pair of fine needle nose pliers.

Hard to even tell exactly by your pic but the snapring/circlip in the recess looks like it needs a long tipped pair of needle pliers.

You could probably lever one side out at a time by using a thin flat screwdriver in the gaps of the ring but it may end up on the piss.
Best to compress it evenly both sides at once with a plier.

Thanks

I got the clip out of the position doing as you suggested. I’ve order a set of long nose 90 degree internal circlip pliers, but I’m not holding out for my luck but will give it a bash.

I wanted the rear calipers sandblasted and powder coated, but if I can’t get out the handbrake mechanism I’ll just get the blasted and then spray them myself. I’m guessing the powder coating heating process would melt any rubber and plastic parts.

So the pliers didn’t work, they’re too wide at the top. I’ve heard to people grinding them down but I don’t think it’s worth it - still annoying though!
