I have an 8V Audi A3 with the Sport suspension de-selected as far as I can tell - this was a commonly-selected option for Audi A3s at the time and I guess it's intended for people who want the higher spec with the most comfy suspension. It is indeed a very comfortable car to ride and handles surprisingly well, albeit a bit wibbly on turn-in.

My brother and father-in-law both have Mk7 Golfs; the former in Match (SE) spec and the latter with a GT. I'd be happy with a GT, but it does ride more firmly.

As far as I know, you can only get SE suspension on a Golf SE and the same for a GT. I don't know which power output 2.0 TDI you are looking at, but bear in mind that a 2.0 TDI with the higher 150hp output is rare in SE spec. You also lose some goodies compared to the GT, although they're still well-spec'd cars.

Lower power cars in all of these model ranges come without the more sophisticated independent suspension of the c.140+hp ones. So, personally, I'd consider an Audi A3 with the SE suspension on a 140+hp Sport as well as the Golf. One of these will have the Goldilocks combination of comfy ride, better handling and more power.

I'm a big Golf fan - but such is the strength of the Golf brand that I find A3s tend to cost the same as Golfs on the used market - often with the same or better specs. This is why I'm on my 4th A3!
