Camera zoom nubbin thing

Why do compact zoom cameras still have this horrible control?
My old old samsung 15x zoom had it and its horrible. Worse in the cold as I found today.
Cant someone design a better zoom control?
If only the ring round the lense could be a manual zoom like proper older cameras.
