I've got to do a 50-mile round trip for work tomorrow, and for short journeys we are encouraged to use the firm's newly-acquired, fully-electric Nissan. Just to clarify it's not a hybrid, it runs on 100% electric.

In the past I've avoided using it by grabbing the keys to one of the vans instead, but there will be none available in the morning so it looks like I'm going to be lumbered with it.

The car has been plugged in all day and from what I can tell it is fully charged. However, it is showing a range of just 28 miles. Surely this can't be right!? Am I misreading the digital dash in some way?

17-plate. Only done a few thousand miles!

EDIT: It's actually a 67-plate.

If it has been driven flat out, and is a 24kwh that would be about right in this weather with heater full blast. Rain and wind also reduce range by a big factor.

My best guess, based on the pic you've posted, is that the car isn't fully charged as there appear to be 2 bars missing at the top. Can you plug it in overnight and charge it at the other end?

It was plugged in for ten hours today!

I've got to drive about 25 miles out tomorrow morning and then I'm coming back in the afternoon. I think I'll just take my 23-year-old Pug instead and claim back the mileage! They don't want us using our own cars anymore, but I don't have much else in the way of choice.

I'd agree with this.
And if its been driven really hard even over a shortish distance, the computer will have calculated a poor range figure which should recover a bit once driven normally.

That battery is knackered and Nissan should be repairing it f.o.c

Having read your last post, sounds like the cars battery is duff! Not great after just 3 years.

The last person to drive it used it on Friday. A trip to Greggs about a mile each way. He is a very steady driver so I'm certain it wasn't thrashed, though he definitely would have had the heater on.

It's almost fully charged at 11/12 bars. The outer bars show the state of condition of the battery. They will never go back to 12/12 bars again unless a new battery is installed.

Range is poor. Must have been driven very uneconomically before.

Should give around 50 miles on full charge even in this weather

I hope the firm didn't pay much for it!

It's got a "knackered" battery. Lost three bars, which represents getting on for 40% of it's original capacity. Plus is it's not fully charged as shown - still got another bar to go to be fully charged.

I sold my Leaf a few months ago and it had done 55,000 miles since 2016, and still had all 12 bars (although was close to losing the first).

Think this one has had a seriously uphill paper round.

If you look at the number of segments on the right side of the display there are 9 out of the 12 there should be. Nissan guarantee replacement or repair if it degrades below 9 bars but this car will be unused or and likely to shut down well before the range gets to zero leaving you stranded, I wouldn’t drive it more than 20 miles

Thanks for your responses everyone and for confirming my suspicions. Since I don't fancy breaking down, I'll be taking my leggy old French hatchback tomorrow instead!

My 12 plate 9 bar Leaf has done 86K. i've not seen estimated range as low as that but i think it has been in the high 30s. Which is real range of mid 20s.

It still charges to 12 bars and the range does jump quite a bit with the last bar, and I think I have still occasionally seen estimated range of 60 miles plus.

If the last bit of driving was unsympathetic then that will bring the estimate down.

How many miles does it have on it? I've never seen one that new with a battery in that state before... might be a warranty job I think they have 8 year warranties.

This. The battery warranty should cover this. Something is wrong with this car.

Always interesting to see real world examples of electric car ownership. My ebike has more range than that.

Is probably nothing wrong with it- they just have a very limited range in cold weather.
