Hello,

My friend is looking for a new car and I thought I'd throw it out to the Community for recommendations. I know you always have some great suggestions!
He's looked at the Golf GTD Estate so far, a Jag XF 2.0D and also an Octavia VRS (He's not discounted them, just looking into the wider market)

"Something I could fit the mountain bike in with the seats down"
  • Max budget- 20k for something special but something between £16 to £18k would be better
  • Estate / Saloon / coupe (would you consider any)-any
  • Petrol or diesel? Diesel
  • Auto or manual? Pref auto
  • Age? Up to 3 years old
  • Doors? 5
  • In terms of MPGS, are you happy with 30,40,50 on the motorway? Mid to high 30's would be ideal
  • Any specific features you'd like? - cruise control ideally adaptive
Thank you very much!

With that budget the world could be his oyster

What about the likes of a BMW 3 or 5 series touring or a decent spec'd Ford Mondeo estate

IMO if bikes are used and want to be transported; you can't do better than an estate/touring unless a fast saloon is wanted and then look to fit decent roof rails and a bike rack (Thule etc)

A well spec'd and lovely looking touring as an example: https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/2015-BMW-3-Series-335d-...

Based on what you are after my recommendation for this thread is the 335d, Circa 2017 so only 3 years old for about 20-22k with haggling for a decent spec'd car with say around the 50k mark.

I have had one.

Great to drive.
Comfortable.

MPG? 40 - 43mpg average in real world.

Speed - Very quick. You don't need full throttle at all to get anywhere past the legal limit of speed, but for what its worth 0-60 was under 5 seconds. That is pretty dam quick!

X-Drive - so very capable in most conditions

Lovely place to spend time. Its very much a great car and i think would answer your friends brief quite well.

Very nice, I do like the look of both of these cars. Any other suggestions that I could pass to him?

Skoda Superb, or Octavia if that is too big.
