A simple case of a plan with far too many moving parts which required every single one to work correctly for it to be a success when even in the best circumstances there will always be some failure points.

Despite it being a failure, the embarrassment it caused the nation and the military caused the US to fundamentally restructure everything about their SF training, tactics & procedures whilst creating a whole new command just to cut-out the "corporate mentality" in-fighting that directly led to part of the operations failure leading to a far better force than one that bravely attempted Eagle Claw.

What involvement did Clinton (Bill, I guess) have in this operation?

Carter was a former US Navy nuclear engineer so probably had a better grounding in military ops than many politicians.

I'd also say it took some very rarely seen mettle, not typical of most politicians, to OK an operation as risky as this was and then accept 100% responsibility for the outcome without trying to throw the military under the bus.
