Some younger ones on here will be going 'who?'

Famous for his guitar riff on 'House of the Rising Sun' with the Animals (1964). RIP

That's sad, remember him from the early and not so early days.
He was 10 years older than me.
I was at school when two of the Animals called in, must have been about 1966. Discussion with a mate who is a few years older than me suggests he went to our School so it may have been him but wiki suggests the other school in Shields which wasn't built when he went to school

I had a lifelong friend (now deceased too) who lived a few doors from him in Queen Alex Rd., think it was her who told me that Hyltons Mum hanged herself one day, he found her when he came back from school. Not sure how true that was.

In the 1980's and 90's Hylton ran a band that played the local pubs and clubs of Tyneside. Hylton Valentines Animals. They were really good, professional outfit, playing music different to the original Animals. Remember many a night in The Pheasant watching & listening.

RIP Hylton

A must for every budding guitar player, the intro to Rising Sun.

I doubt Hilton become a millionaire, but, wow, those first few years must have been great,
an anonymous twenty something from geordie-land with a hit single hitting the heights in the USA.

RIP Hilton, they also serve who only play a cracking intro.

And Alan Price robbed them of all the arrangement royalties according to rumour...
They all had a hand in it but just his name on the record

frown

The first long playing record in my collection was by The Animals.

In mono.

I still have it.

Chas was the instigator of what became the Tyneside Arena along with Nigel Stanger who has a NE band "The 88s" which became the "East Side Torpedoes" which in turn spawned a number of other local bands. As you say he went on to manage Jimi amongst other well known artists. But we digress as this is about Hylton.

I dont think any of the Animals made much money. Chas Chandler had to sell his bass to buy Hendrix's air fare to London in the Autumn of 1966.
By having "Trad: Arr A Price" on the label of House of the Rising Sun, Price copped for all the royalties. He got chucked out and "Fear of flying" was cited as the reason.
Eric Burdon, on behalf of the band, asked Price for a share of the spoils in 1983. Price refused. They haven't spoken since.

Chas also managed a local band '21 Strangers' in the 80's - we used to see them at the Lonsdale in West Jesmond and he'd be lurking in the background. I think he thought they would be the next big thing but they didn't make it (1 appearance on TOTP if I recall correctly).

I recall the east Side Torpedoes, along with the Junko Partners, Hot Snax and others from the time. Dance Class were another and the lesser known but brilliant Punishment of Luxury who were a sort of new wave arthouse band who had regular spots at the Bridge Hotel.

They were good days!

...and rubbing shoulders with John Bonham at the bar in the City Tavern before Zep played at the City Hall - he signed my girlfriends jeans with a biro, she should have kept them.

That must have been just after they reunited for that Animals 20th Anniversary reunion gig.....which was probably the last time they are played together.....probably even last time they were all together - period.
I remember having that gig on an old VHS tape having recorded of cable TV about 1984/5 ish.
