Hi all, please forgive if this is a really, really stupid question.

We had a Google Nest Thermostat fitted almost a year ago. We have been plagued by the H71 fault code throughout, which results in the thermostat losing it's connection with the heatlink connected to the boiler. Wasn't to big an issue through the summer, but now it's winter the thermostat continually loses it's connection with the heatlink.

We have noticed that when the outside temperature dips to near freezing the thermostat will not connect at all and we have to set heating to manual (which also means heating the hot water while heating is on). We turn heating off overnight which means every morning we wake to no heating. Fortunately ours is not a cold house, it just means getting out of bed and nipping down into the garage to quickly turn heating on manually.

The heatlink and boiler is situated in the garage, which is unheated, and obviously does get very cold. The thermostat and heatlink communicate via wifi, my wifi speed always seems to be quick and perfectly satisfactory, is it possible that the cold has an effect on the wifi strength (in the garage) and thus the connection is lost?

Grateful for any answers. :-)

Is any part of it battery powered? if so, that's the likely culprit.

The only other possibility is if a wall between the two bits is getting damp.

My nest loses connection time to time but the problem with mine is turning itself on at 4am even when it’s set to below 15 degrees so I have also started switching it off at night and turning the heating on manually in the morning which defeats the purpose!

No, both mains powered. Interesting comment re damp wall, but really don't think that's the case.

We think there is a setting on the thermostat, a self learning feature, designed to save money iirc. We found it was bonkers, and as you've found possibly, it actually costs money rather than save. This self-learning feature can be turned off at the thermostat.

Thanks for replies so far guys, anyone else any thoughts on wifi strength/signal and cold temps? smile

I have a hive, hub is in the living room connected to the router and behind the tv. Boiler is in the garage and the receiver regularly lost connection so I put a wifi disc in the garage to boost the signal for both it and a camera overlooking the drive.
The disc didn't get a great signal either so although the problem was reduced it still lost connection occasionally.
As I already had power line adaptors I paired a spare one up, connected the disc up by ethernet and haven't had a single drop in connection since.
P.s. are you only noticing the problem when it's cold as you use the heating more?

Never put anything behind the TV. Really messes with wifi signals. An extension cable for a Firestick solved all my connection woes, same with a Chromecast. Once I could bring things away from behind the screen the connections were perfect.

PS No use putting the wifi disc in the garage where the signal is weak. Best to put it half way so that it will boost a strong signal

Hi, we have the thermostat in the hall (coldest room) and so we see it every time we walk past. I'd say it's not so much an issue of using heating more, it's the actual pairing of thermostat to heatlink which is the issue, irrespective of whether heating is on or not. Having said that, we obviously notice that the heating is off on very cold mornings.

We now realise that the pairing *will* be lost in cold temps, not 'might be'.

Ah... guess where our router is. frown
