I don’t doubt that Trump is a “useful idiot” for the Russian intelligence services. Too much about the whole situation is explained so well by it that it’s impossible to ignore. Occam’s Razor.

Certainly for some time. They played on his greed with his property sales, easy to launder money through if you pay twice the value of a property.
