Good morning Folks

A friend of mine has just moved into a new property. However, he cannot get internet access when he is in some of the rooms of his new home.

Does he have to buy some sort of 'dongle' to get the required connection? If so, can you recommend anything?

Thank you

Mr E

Do you mean the WiFi coverage from his router isn’t sufficient to reach all rooms of the house?

If so, consider a WiFi mesh setup and position the nodes appropriate.

When you say ‘internet access’, I presume you mean Wi-Fi connection? Or are you talking about 3/4/5G?

Does he have a broadband connection to the property with a modem / router? If so, there are lots of options to improve Wi-Fi coverage - a better wireless router, power line adaptors, mesh systems.

Pretty much this. I’ve never been impressed with the default router.

Worth calling up virgin and grumbling about how st their modem/router is. They might give you an extender for free.

... they might also try to sell you one, in which case decline and do yourself as suggested above.

IE just add a new router? They look pretty cheap. Is the performance significantly improved?

It doesn't matter what equipment you've got, its your friend who has problems. What does he/she have?

If its WIFI emanating from a superhub 3.0, from my research it appears this an absolute waste of space router device and the vast majority of people seem to have coverage issues with it, no matter how many times you "optimise" the system with the app.

I've just added a TP Link Deco M5 mesh system to the house and it seems to have sorted out our issues. It was a bit of a faff to do, and i'll still need to sort out extra power sockets and mounting the units strategically to hide wires and maximise coverage, but it seems £180 well spent.

Someone mentioned above about calling Virgin Media and complaining about the SH3 performance in order to get a wifi extender sent out. Well unfortunately 3 things might stop you from achieving this:

1) No one is available to talk to about technical issues at present, certainly not via their main switch board
2) There are no intelligent wifi pods available in the country at the moment (I wonder why?)
3) They want £5 a month for the privilege of providing you with a wifi pod

I have one of these Deco systems, which is very easy to set up, you install an app on your phone and it guides you through the setup. Network cable from the router (ie your virgin box) to one of the units, and then the other 2 units sit in other locations around the house and automatically relay the signal. The P9's use the mains electric cabling as well as wifi to talk to each other, but there are several different Deco units at a range of prices. Most other Mesh systems work in a similar way, but I'd definitely recommend Deco systems to the non tech savy given how easy they are to set up.

To set the virgin router to modem mode you need to log in to it from your computer and change a setting, but it's simple to do
