Shock factory. The unit itself looks good quality and they have been going years.
I told them my weight with gear is 100kg and no pillion required. It’s a standard 200kg naked - SV650.
I was a bit concerned when the unit arrived as I couldn’t see any spring rate marked on the spring which I’ve seen before on other custom units I’ve had.

If you had a custom sprung rear shock where would you expect the preload to sit for 30mm rider sag?
Reason I ask is that I had one made and I’ve needed to use about 75% of max preload to get the right sag.
If you mean that you are using 75% of the threaded adjustment range to set the dynamic sag( bike and rider), the spring rate is incorrect. Reason I ask is that I had one made and I’ve needed to use about 75% of max preload to get the right sag.
Typically you should be looking around the 8-15mm range to set up the dynamic sag.
FWIW, static (bike only) is pretty meaningless...

Thanks. Yes I’ve had to use 75% of available thread to get the dynamic sag to 30mm.Typically you should be looking around the 8-15mm range to set up the dynamic sag.

It’s got 60mm of thread and I’ve used 50mm.
I suspected the spring wasn’t right hence my question.
Have to say I’m a bit disappointed with shock factory, why bother taking weight and use details if they only bang a generic spring on it.
I’ve not ridden it yet but really hope it’s an improvement over the original spring which actually felt ok but looked really cheap and everyone said runs out of damping around the 10k mile mark.

Mike Cappon is spot on to deal with. We use shock factory on our sidecar and they are great units. Just drop him an Email and some photos. I'm sure he will sort it out.
I had some Brexit import tax issues and Mike was great in sorting it out. I was pretty surprised how far out the shock was as everything else has been good. I’ve dropped him an email but ultimately I’ve got to the right sag with some adjustment left so maybe I’m being to fussy.

Yeah he has what seem some strange ideas sometimes But they always seem to work. We had soft helper springs on our fronts at TT made the world of difference.I was pretty surprised how far out the shock was as everything else has been good. I haven’t actually asked for a new spring but I emailed saying that the spring rate for the unit they sent is obviously wrong and haven’t heard anything back.
I think the answer will be for me to ride it and see which I will do once I get a mot etc. but what does everyone else think about how it will feel?
I’ve got to 30mm dynamic sag by using most of the preload which has resulted in no static sag.
I’ve thought about it and can’t really see what 5 or 10mm of static sag benefits but lots of people say it’s necessary.
As I’ve got time now should I sort it or just go with what I’ve got and it will be fine if not ideal?

If the spring is the wrong weight, regardless of your 30mm dynamic sag being achieved, the spring is still wrong.
The excessive preload will mean a lot of energy needs to be put into the spring before it starts working but once it does it'll be too soft and just won't ride correctly with it being overworked by the weight imposed by you.
Remember that preload only moves the energy input value to start the spring going. It DOES NOT change the springs fundamental rate of X kg/mm once it is moving.
