Label Non-stunned halal and kosher meat?
Discussion
Sounds like a win for animal welfare to me.
"evidence on slaughter without pre-stunning, known as non-stun slaughter, shows that animals feel the pain of the neck cut; experience a delay in loss of consciousness (lasting up to 2 minutes in cattle); and are highly likely to suffer pain, suffering, and distress during the cut and bleeding."
"A Defra spokesperson said: “The Government would prefer all animals to be stunned before slaughter but we respect the rights of Jewish and Muslim people to eat meat prepared in accordance with their beliefs.
I'd like to be able to choose.

The RSPCA and BVA have been pushing for this for 2 years.
https://www.rspca.org.uk/adviceandwelfare/farm/sla...
They found that 42% of halal and 100% of kosher is unstunned.

I would prefer that we simply ban un-stunned slaughter. It is inhumane and not acceptable to me.
I most certainly do not wish to buy it. We only buy free range and organic meat.
Read up on the research of Doktor Schultz at Hannover University- his work suggests that stunning is actually a less humane method than halal/kosher if the latter is done properly. I most certainly do not wish to buy it. We only buy free range and organic meat.
You might choose to dismiss it as not suiting your views but peer-reviewed research from a German university is a strong argument IMHO.

I'll go with the British Veterinary Association (as per the article) over Doktor Schultz. You might choose to dismiss it as not suiting your views but peer-reviewed research from a German university is a strong argument IMHO.
Doctor Shultz and Dr Hazim...
An unlikely pair, one being a pig expert and one being a muslim carried out research between 1974 and 1978, lo and behold they found cutting the throat without stunning was less painful.
I do wonder why we bother with anesthetic, if being conscious actually causes less pain.
Dr Shultz did note that the stunning process they used may not have functioned correctly, so he caveat ed his own research but it is offered up as some sort of gospel on the matter.
A later study in 2009 carried out by a joint UK and NZ team found the complete opposite, using more upto date techniques and mild anesthetic.
Defra would prefer all animals to be stunned first yet they will bend the rules to pander to the needs of Mulsims 4% of the UK population and Jews 0.3% of the population. All because some ancient texts suggested that man cant consume blood and that they animal has to hear a pray to God before being killed.
Surely a bloody steak is a joy ?
I assume the Op i a raving racist, i was accused of as much by suggesting we shouldn't introduce something and yet here is somebody suggesting we take something away !!!

Its one of the reasons I will not go in pleases like Subway when it is Halal (when I ask for Bacon I want Bacon if I wanted Turkey I would ask for it).
My wife did 5 weeks full time in an abattoir as part of her EHO degree. They did halal and kosher on different days.
How she got through it I will never know. I couldn't, I know that and am not squeamish either.
Its the build up to the whole process and how industrialised the whole thing is that I could not cope with.
She says even stunning is not perfect, on occasion the animals are badly injured in the process - before or during.
The animals know what's going to happen. The thing that had the most effect on her was the slitting of the throat and also the blowing up of the lungs post slaughter. That was cows. They also did chickens which were apparently not as bad as they were processed much faster and more hands free.
Some of her class mates did stints at pig slaughter houses and apparently that was even worse.

If you was going to be killed tomorrow how would you rather go being almost instantly knocked out then have your throat cut or having your throat cut when awake choking on your own blood as you lose consciousness?

You can imagine Dignitas offering two options, medication that will put you to sleep or the less painful method of slitting your throat and letting you bleed to death !!Its one of the reasons I will not go in pleases like Subway when it is Halal (when I ask for Bacon I want Bacon if I wanted Turkey I would ask for it).
Yet another reason why I detest all religions.
If you have to kill it.... try to make it as instant and painless as possible.
Heck - taking your family pet to the vet at end of life for euthanasia to ease its suffering.
Does the vet offer you....
a/ We will strap your family friend upside down while we slit its throat while the blood spills out.
b/ We will inject into here. Say your goodbye's and we will inject It will take a second or so - and they will be gone.
Religion is quite simply evil.

I agree; it should be labelled and we should be able to choose."evidence on slaughter without pre-stunning, known as non-stun slaughter, shows that animals feel the pain of the neck cut; experience a delay in loss of consciousness (lasting up to 2 minutes in cattle); and are highly likely to suffer pain, suffering, and distress during the cut and bleeding."

Surely it’s time we had a review of everything when it comes to how we treat such animals - from halal/kosher slaughter to the spread of US-style mega-farms over here to the factory farming of poultry to the way abattoirs are run etc.
I’m no vegetarian and eat meat regularly however when you see some of the stuff that goes on in the production of such food it does make you stand back and think.

How long before someone raises the racist card?
Unlikely as it's a matter of religious belief...Regardless I've often thought that they'd be a lot more vegetarians if we had to slaughter our own meat, it's not nice whichever way and no I'm not a vegetarian but I would be if I had to.
