Our lovely next door neighbours whatsapped me last night, they have 3 boys, the eldest being 14 and an avid gamer.

said boy got into an argument with someone online who told him to "shut up or they'd take his internet down". He then told them their external IP address, on the basis that "couldn't do anything", at which point their internet crashed, and wouldn't come back up.

We all have fttp- they have 1gig down and 200meg up. I didn't get to see the network, but I'm told they didn't lose sync.

My advice was to reboot the router to force it to pick up a new IP address (they are on dynamic addressing) and to close any open ports on the basis that the attack was a simple DDOS.

Could it have been something else though? If so, what? They have a fritzbox router which is a perfectly acceptable piece of kit, but has no intrusion prevention.

I am no more than a prosumer of IT kit (well i was a network manager 20 years ago- which is a bit like asking a caveman to design a rocket motor) so any help and thoughts would be appreciated

Play stupid games, win stupid prizes? Maybe said 14 year old learnt a valuable lesson.

Probably isn’t anything particularly noteworthy about what this other guy did. A straightforward port scan and then flooding traffic to an open port would essentially hobble a home internet connection.

Sounds like some kind of basic DDOS.

Depends on how far they wish to take it as DDOS comes under the Computer Misuse Act:

Thanks All

My presumption was a simple DDOS- just wanted to check there wasn't another likely answer that i'd missed.

Thanks for the LOIC link- hadn't come across that before...useful...
