Cost of a modern respray?
Discussion
Hi All,
I've searched the internet for agessssss on the rough cost of a decent glass out respray (I know it varies on paint and optional finishes etc but just looking for a ballpark) for my MK2 golf, but all I can find is stuff from years ago. I'm guessing the price will have gone up.
Just looking for an estimate, any help is appreciated

Around west mids if anyone knows decent places. Car is mostly fine there's just a bunch of chips and some bits inside the door jams where the paint is coming off. To be honest I just want to refresh it a bit and make sure I don't have to worry in the future.
I've been recommended Color Code Motors in Studley. Not used them or visited yet, by the sounds of it I've some similar requirements to you. I've just paid £5k (cash..) for a windows out jobby on my Corrrado. Had a bit of welding done - new panel on the fuel filler cap and a bit behind the windscreen.
Paint finish is nice, couple of issues with microblisters/dirt in the lacquer on the roof and bonnet but not that noticeable unless you get your nose up to it.
I would recommend stripping the car as much as you can yourself if going for a full respray, ideally get the car to them as a shell. I ended up having to do most of that when I got it back (grommets not used on badges, spoiler leaked, fuel tank pipes not routed right etc).
If i was doing it again, and I will be with my mk2 and another corrado, I would either just get the parts that need painting done or have the car stripped back to metal and painted. You're never going to get perfection if you don't go down that route and by just getting the bits that need sorted you'll get 90% of a full respray anyway without the hassle of it not going back together right or expensive trim getting broken.
Also if you feel you might need fabrication work becuase bolt on panels are not avaiable be careful who you pick to do the work. Most bodyshops aren't panel fabricators so you'll end up with bits that were meant to be metal made out of filler instead...
My friend has used a place in the West Mids - PHM autobodies in Rugely. Work looks good on both his rado and mk2. I was considering them but have found a highly recommended place near me instead.

It can vary on many factors, but I would suggest having a word with a company who did one of the best restorations I've ever seen on any car on a friend of a friend's Oak Green MK2 GTi 16v. Send a message to sales@midlandperformance.co.uk and tell them Mike J recommended you and ask to see aforementioned GTI. Prepare for your jaw to hit the floor. Then prepare for your jaw to hit the floor again when they tell you how much that cost to do. But that was a hell of a lot more than just a repaint. Can they do MFA fixes as mines leaked to death and it might be cheaper than getting a whole new clock set?Are you looking for a 'drive in-drive out' jobby??
So strip vehicle
Repair any damage/corrosion
Prepare & prime
Paint (clear over base)
Flat & polish
Rebuild
Materials on a full paint is at least £1200.00 if using decent products/water base etc
For something half decent you would be looking at £6-8k + VAT... Plus any parts needed when rebuilding....

Yeah Ideally something like that, but I don't think (Hopefully) there would be too much to repair, as the car is nice and solid. The rebuilding bit worries me slightly tho...So strip vehicle
