I would like my drivers to wear a uniform.

We are just a run of the mill taxi firm, Hyundai, Toyota, Ford, all modern stuff, all silver with burgundy signwriting, but my drivers wear what they like. To be fair though, they don't look scruffy. No shell suits or tracksuit bottoms and dirty tee shirts.

I'd like to provide a uniform that looks smart without making them look too much like chauffeurs and certainly not like airline pilots or nightclub bouncers. I was thinking along the lines of shirt and tie and black trousers and shoes and some sort of jacket and perhaps a v-necked jumper?

I'm not aiming for the Merc E class private hire stuck up clientelle, but I would like to set us apart from the scruffy mess that is the local taxi ranks. Our service and reputation already does that, but I think the cherry would be a uniform. To clarify, we don't chase the 'alright if I bring my kebab?' trade. Ours is more contract work for local businesses and councils. We do very little (none at the moment!!) cash work.

Any suggestions please?

Just a shirt and tie does it I think, with dark trousers... maybe light coloured shirt with tie colour matching the signwriting?

Isn't a shirt, tie, shoes and black trousers a tad dated?

What about a branded polo shirt with smart casual trousers/chino's and a shoes?

A tie is unnecessary and would be uncomfortable to wear all day, personally I couldn't care less what my taxi driver wears, a shirt would be smart enough.

Are you going to buy the uniform or make the drivers pay for it? They will be able to get some tax allowance for washing it at home.

This. The drivers will no doubt be much happier also.

Maybe some branded soft shell jackets also.

Maybe provide a dress code rather than a uniform, say formal attire since that seems to be the look you were going for. Then they can wear what looks good on them while still maintaining your corporate image, which might be important in a diverse workforce.

I love a nice uniform myself, particularly now I have to wear a horrendous crew neck pullover and cargo trousers as part of mine! grumpy (Only one more months until I can wear a shirt...) But some people get a bit arsey when someone tells them what to wear, probably a hangover from school days. Have you asked your employees what they think of the idea?

Dark trousers

Shoes (not trainers)

Branded polo shirt - decent quality

Branded jumper or fleece for the winter.

For a run-of-the-mill taxi firm, that's all that is required.

Shirt/Tie/Jacket is only required if you were running chauffeurs in Mercedes or BMWs.

Why not ask the drivers what if anything they would like. Nothing worse than being uncomfortable all day because someone thinks it looks smart.

I would go for the logoed polo shirt and smart trousers, with a logoed fleece for the colder days.

Yep, polo shirt with logo and dark trousers. Also, as someone else mentioned, as you give them the kit, let them know they can apply online for a bit of tax back.

Agreed. Does somebody really expect a taxi driver to be wearing a short and tie? Smart shoes? Really?

Agree with the polo shirt or short sleeve shirt with logo but please give them enough for a week and a spare.

I would hate to be one of your drivers and be made to wear a fleece. Some people including myself can't wear fleeces because certain fabrics (velvet is the most common) are very unpleasant to touch due to sensory issues. I myself have problems with velvet, synthetic fleece, brushed cotton and any of that super-soft synthetic fluffy material many dressing gowns are made from today. It sends fingernails on a blackboard shivers down my spine when I touch any of them. These issues can affect up to 20% of the population, so it's not uncommon at all.

Instead of choosing particular items to be worn, I'd let them choose anything smart casual but from a corporate colour palette.
