Apologies in advance if this has been asked before.

I’d like to cook a really nice fish based valentines meal for the Mrs. She loves prawns, scallops and tuna steaks. I can get the former easily enough but not the Tuna.

So, as per the title, can anyone suggest places to buy large Tuna steaks (300g ish each)? The supermarket fish counters either don’t seem to have it at the moment or won’t cut to size. I also need some ideas if anyone has a suggestion as to what to cook with it!

If you're near Watford or Aylesbury, then the Aylesbury Fish Market are used by the local Japanese communities (Japanese wise of a friend in St Albans is an active member) and most of the tuna they sell is considered sushi/sashimi grade. In Watford they have a stall in the market two or three days a week.

I've bought tuna steaks over the fish counter in Waitrose before. I told them it was for sushi, and the guy said 'hold on, I'll get the really fresh stuff'.

Is Aylesbury Fish Market the same as M&J Seafoods - or is it something different?

Got the name slightly wrong (now I've found their business cad) - It's Aylesbury Fisheries - no email address and an old (last updated April 2020) FaceBook page - had to check but not linked to M&J Seafoods

Thanks for clearing that up.

It's a little strange, but I can find no connection with Aylesbury at all - they only seem to have a retail presence at Watford market. Still - I will give them a try.

I believe they used to be in Aylesbury, started covering Watford as well. Not sure if they now just do the one place - take it you're near by. Their number is 01923 462173

What a coincidence as, following a long break off Tuna, wifey and I had Tuna steaks from Waitrose fish counter last night and they were superb.

My suggestion (what we do) is new potatoes, aeloi (homemade) and avocado salsa. Do the steaks pink of course and well seared.

For your salsa - chopped avocado, chopped de seeded tomatoes, finely chopped red onion, a finely chopped birds eye chilli, chopped corriander, olive oil, a whole squeezed lime, salt and pepper and mix it all up.

An English Bacchus wine is perfect - 3 Choirs or similar (or even Aldi Lyme Block!)

The best Tuna I have ever bought, whether by price or by quality, is the place I use now.

I got a delivery today.

£22.50 for a kilo of sashimi grade super fresh tuna. I buy a kilo and share with family. Supermarket price at least £35 per kilo.

www.kingcrab.co,uk.

P.S. the crab is awesome as well.

Today’s delivery, halibut tuna and dressed crab. We ate the halibut this evening. Stunning.

And a kilo of King Crab for the freezer.
