I used to play around with the modpro music tracking stuff on the Amiga many years ago, haven’t really looked into it since additional hardware boxes in racks were the thing.

What’s the good standard for hardware and software in electronic music these days?

I'm in no position to give you a full answer but from your background you may be interested in the Polyend Tracker. I've got my eye on them for similar reasons but wanting to find one at a good price.

I'm out of touch as well but what do you want to do? Big difference in kit requirements between a bit of sequencing and synth vs. multitrack recording.

For what it's worth, I have used Logic for years and like it, but I first started working with it in 1996 so familiarity has a big role to play! I'm still using external kit I bought in that era as well so perhaps not that much help!

Cubase is still popular, now comes in various flavours/features. If you're looking for something a bit more DJ'y then take a look at Ableton Live. Hardware is still very popular with Behringer making some great synths along with some great clones in the pipeline.

There is literally an option for any budget and any preference now.

I’m using Logic, ProTools, Ableton and Cubase. And a lot of studio toys.

But I could also just create music on my iPad with garage band. Or Cubase.

So the answer is a question: “how long is a piece of string?”

Ipad and a midi controller and go up from there.

If you do go Ipad, then the Audiobus forum is well worth a read.

As others have said, there’s an option for every budget.
It must be the best time for home studios as the tech is so affordable these days.

Processing power is cheap so it’s possible to work on an iPad/pc with or without external keyboards etc

Likewise, Behringer has done brilliantly to bring the cost of hardware down - I’ve got two Model D’s but could never have justified an original Moog Model D.

I’ve got a mix of software synths and hardware synths - the problem is I have too many yet don’t have enough!!!

Might I suggest that if you are buying a midi keyboard you buy one that is a synth as well for starters- that way you can mess around without needing to be near a computer all the time.
