Help with wi-fi router settings
Discussion
I could do with some help with an absolute numpty question about router settings.
Long story short - son has been nagging me to play minecraft online with him. Him on android tablet, me on iPad. I can never successfully join his world over wifi, although he does it with his mates over the internet all the time.
However, if I come off the home wifi, and use my phone as a hotspot i can connect no problem. I'm therefore assuming that there must be some kind of setting on my router that needs adjusting. Googling seems to indicate it's something to do with port 25565.
It's a virgin wifi router. Is it 'port forwarding' that I need to do?
Here's the screen on the wifi set up for port forwarding:

Can anyone give me a clue as to what I need to put in each box?
Many thanks for the help!

Port forwarding is for an external connection going in. I'm at a loss as to how it will help you when you're "inside" the router.
If you must try it, the local IP is the address the router is giving your iPad, use 25565 for all the port begin/end options, try either or both of TCP and UDP for protocol, and "yes" for enabled.
If/when that doesn't work, don't forget to remove it - leaving unexpected routes into a network is great for causing an unexpected security vulnerability years later.

It might be a version issue. Can your phone connect when it's on the WiFi? Might just be your iPad has a version that cannot play multi-player.
In my Sky router we set up the following but as explained above, this just allows external connections access to the Minecraft router my lad has built.

And the server runs on a 40" TV so that his friends can see it over his shoulder (it's all about the background when you're sharing your video, apparently).

It’s not an issue with the iPad, because as soon as I’m off the home network, we can connect and play. That’s why I’m thinking it must be the router that’s interfering.
We haven’t got a Minecraft server set up - we’re just connecting two devices to play together and , if I understand correctly, port forwarding is to control a connection coming from outside your network.
I will have a poke around the other router settings, but it’s an area where I’m massively in the dark...

This sounds like a typical NAT issue associated with games.
I remember one of my sons having an issue similar to this with some game (might have been WoW) - but basically the game doesn't allow for two internal sessions via NAT - this is why you are able to connect using your phone, as that is probably using an external connection.
A VPN might work, but you would need to force all your traffic out via the VPN - whether or not the game would support that...
