Hi all! I'm importing a South African MGA, which according to the vin lookup is a CKD car (as all were that were for that market). I'm desperate to avoid a Q plate, but have searched through the forums and found conflicting info about whether it's CKD itself or 'built up' on the SA reg documents that sends it down that path in the eyes of the DVLA...this one is CKD, but it's not 'built up' on the RC1 (SA reg doc) under status - it's 'used'.

Anyone who has any knowledge of whether this will be enough for me to swerve the dreaded 'Q' status?

I'm 99% sure that it doesn't matter. As long as it's been registered previously and meets the definition of a plg for UK registration then you get an age related plate based on its original first registration date.

Which on a SA 'Built Up' category will be mean it doesn't get a age related plate, well it will but for the date it was built up on the SA doc....
So, it very much matters.
SA 'Built Up' category is bad news for a classic import to UK from SA, and is to be walked away from.

You may have swerved it, as it's the dreaded SA Built Up status that is the one to avoid by all accounts.

Does the RC1 state an original CKD vin number....?

SA As Built status has been discussed on here previously, but not anything in relation to a CKD.

But if you still get an age related plate, even if it's the 'wrong' age, then you can later get it reregistered on a 'private' plate of the correct age can't you? It's only Q plates that can never be changed once they've been allocated.

Sorry, I didn't word that very well, and my brain was going quicker than my fingers...
SA Built Up status when imported does not get any age related plate, even a recent one from DVLA.

I must admit that Built Up is a new one on me. Every day's a school day.

The RC1 does carry the original VIN number, and also a 'date of liability for first licencing' of 01.01.57. So this all seems like good news in terms of avoiding the Q-plate!

The British Motor Museum have said they have a record of CKD kits, so could produce a heritage certificate that will give;

'the dates of when the CKD was despatched and to where, the trim and hood colours and the factory fitted extras Abingdon supplied'

So this also seems like something the DVLA might accept?

This seems to be getting unecessarily confused:

CKD is not relevant if the car was in any case previously registered in SA (that is clearly the case since you have a liability start date)

If the RC1 status is "used" and not "built-up" (as seems to be indicated in the OP), then all is well. Used just means the car has passed from the person who completed the original registration (this can be original +1 or +99 it doesn't matter).

Built-up is generally reserved (not unlike the DVLA) for a car of indeterminate heritage (including, but not limited to, from an unknown manufacturer e.g kit car) or one which has been returned to the road following extensive rebuild e.g. crash rebuild. Built-up does not automatically follow from CKD.

An SA Built Up status car can get an age related plate in the UK - no question about that.

Alfa Romeo's with this status imported to the UK requires a letter from the AR Factory Archives (which many classic owners get model specific info from, and a well trodden path), and an accompanying letter from the ARUK Club Registrar - and sent to the DVLA.

Of course, happy to contribute to the repository of info. Car is purchased and in transit - will let everyone know what happens with the registration.

Its not an Alfa Romeo though.....and more significantly, its not a European factory built car either.......so you need to be careful about making blanket statements of "no question about that".....especially when the whims of the DVLA are concerned.

Just for anyone following up;

The CKD does not appear to have been an issue in the slightest (whereas a 'built up' designation would have been it appears). I took delivery of the car, and it was registered (after 4 months! Thanks DVLA) without complaint on an age related plate.
