contemplating an upgrade to a turbo'd 996

just wondered what life with a GT2 is like

The car will be weekend only, 5k pa max, no tracking so not worried about PCCB and will have to do the weekly shop as only car. Also I live in London and plenty of speed bumps about.

Will a GT2 negotiate speed bumps if attacked at angle or will all sorts of expensive carbon bits come off? How exploitable will the extra GT2 power be (for a non-Schumacher coming from a 986S) over the 996tt.

I know the 996tt is the more sensible choice but just want to get a measure of the whether the GT2 will be a pain as I love the looks.

Also what are people's views on future depreciation of a £60k tt v £65k GT2 with similar miles and both 2003 cars.

Thanks

crossed my mind

now figured out the search function and seen this is done to death so will restrict my enquiry to ground clearance

GT2 is 20mm lower so is it a bitch in London?

Also would TT with a GT2 spoiler kit (factory-fitted) have the same problem or will it have lower front lip but ride 20mm higher so not be so bad?

No you don't. You have a car with similar power, but a far inferior suspension setup and 100-170kg heavier, depending on the year.

For purely road usage, I'd personally take the Turbo. The extra toys, psm & 4wd all make sense to me on the road.

Having said that, I go on track so for myself its GT3 or GT2 for sure

For the track maybe, if its purely a road car then I would have to say the Turbo has the better set-up, esp on UK roads.

GT2 love it - bought it for the track mainly, had turbo before 993TT - nothing wrong with GT2 for road use, does look the business but it is low. I have already removed and run over the front plastic bib / splitter its £155 to replace - easy DIY job.

The brake ducts also hang down and scrape the road, again no much in cash but you will have to get used to that scraping feeling.

I certainly don't consider my X50 as a 4WD GT2. Much heavier, and different suspension setup. I'd have to say that calling it "inferior" is a bit strong. TT suspension better suited to road use. GT2 better for track. Personally, I'm , more than happy with both the performance and handling of mine, and having all the toys (PCM, Bose, etc) makes it a better every day proposition. My advice would be to think seriously about what you want to use the car for, and then make a choice between the two.

Guys,
Adams question was with regards to STREET USE NOT TRACK so the suspension set up on the tt is as far as im concerned BETTER than the GT2. Track use visa versa.
Performance wise;- GT2 0-100 8.9 secs, X50 0-100 8.4 secs. Also it will outperform the GT2 in the wet and handle bumps better even with the extra 100Kgs.

So what 996 Turbo X50 can you buy for £35K then?

as turbo mentioned my car will not be tracked, hence the gist of the question re. usability, and I am sure turbo was talking about new £90k v £126k

thing is now GT2s can be had for similar money for TTs - probably reflecting their difficulty to shift and bad reputation (not from me I hasten to add but it can't help when my local independent said "Porsche should never have made it" etc etc)

Did your independant justify that statement?

I've still got to sort out my GT2 test drive, but I've heard an interesting array of comments about them from past and present owners!

Weren't RSs given a similar bad rap when they first came out?

As were 993 GT2s, which is why they only sold a handful.............now of course they are highly desired.

Just got this months GT Purely Porsche. Chris Harris said that despite selling his 996 GT2 for a 993 GT2 he declared the 996 GT2 the most underated 911 of all time...........

Yeah but going by our other pistonheader he dumped it on a dealer needing a new clutch at the minimum!

Been checking the newsagents for the latest issue for the last few days.

For what its worth, I suspect the GT2 is a bit of a handful for the normal Porsche buyer, but won't disquiet a noble/tvr owner too much. I'll report back once I've got behind the wheel! Whilst the power may be acceptable, I'm a tad worried about the damping.

GT2 damping is poor - the car is too hard for most UK A and B roads.

Morning Adam...still not decided yet then? As i posted before on your other thread i'd go for a 996 x50 as a more useable everyday car with more exploitable power and handling on our wonderfully smooth roads.

I would like to think if I was having to decide between a 996 Turbo and GT2 that I would go for the GT2. It looks better and people think you have massive gonads for just sitting in it. It's much rarer. More special for sure.

If it was a weekend car, GT2, but having had to be careful about ground clearance with a Mk1 GT3 (whose ground clearance was no better than my Radical), I'd go for a 996TT for normal driving. You'll also be able to put much more of the power down in the wet without having to worry too much that you'll be sideways pretty quickly with the torque.

In saying, all that, they do indeed look the dogs danglies and will be much more sought after than a regular Turbo in the future, if not already. Lot of car for the money.
