Looking at a second hand GS at a BMW dealer. Bike is up for 10.5k. No trade in and cash purchase, any thoughts on how much I might get off with some haggling?

Thanks.

Probably best to just ask. In my experience dealers (specifically bike rather than car) are pretty reasonable. Don't beat around the bush, just ask them for some movement but keep in mind that they do need to make money too, so management your expectations and settle on a price you're both happy with.

Presumably the bike comes with their 'approved used 2 year warranty'....?

I was going to ask but was hoping to get some insight. I don’t intend to take the p1ss. Some dealers have set margins that they apply and wondered if this was the case for BMW.

Yes, it’s a BMW approved bike, so 2 year’s warranty and 2 years European breakdown.

In my experience, very few BMW dealers are willing to haggle much, if at all.

They are happy to sell you extra things at a discount, but the chances of getting money off your original purchase are slim to fk-all.

It was explained to me once as "if you won't buy it at that price, someone else will eventually come along who will."

Of course, I now fully expect half a dozen other people to come along and tell us about the amazing discounts they received, how they shagged the salesman's wife etc...

hehe

As others have said BMW dont like giving any discount, I think I was offered 200 off an adventure costing about 16k.

All the online offers have mostly removed haggling room these days

^^^ That's my experience

I think because everyone's on the internet and most will send bikes anywhere in the country their advertised prices have to be competitive so there's no room to manoeuvre

Most will discount over time so if you get there on the right day you might get lucky - I always ask before setting out and again if I see something that wasn't as described

Thanks all. I see how I do. I was taking to another dealer about a 900XR they had but they might be a bit more open to discount on them.

They may be inclined to offer you a discount if you take their finance, which you could do and then cancel within 14 days and pay it off with cash or a 0% card, you'll have to pay a few quid in interest but it can be worth doing this way.

The dealer won't like it much but there's not a lot they can do about it.

Does it make a difference to the dealer?
I thought your contract was with the finance company and the dealer had already got their slice?

Sometimes they'll get a kickback from the finance company so a discount doesn't really cost them anything

Sorry, what I meant was that I was under the impression that the dealer got their kickback when the papers were signed so cancelling/paying off sooner/later made no difference to them?

The dealer will have their commission clawed back from the finance company.

Yeah, I've just been googling and found that out.

I guess that if you don't plan on buying from the same dealer again in the near future it makes no difference, if you tend to buy from the same guy he's going to remember you...

I’ve bought a few BMW bikes from the same salesman. As said above, ticket price is sale price.
I did manage to get a few things though. The first 600 miles service for free. A very healthy discount on a jacket and helmet. It sweetened the deals enough for me.

I got 11.5% off the RRP total (on cash purchase of brand new bike with accessories). Have bought a few bikes from the dealership.

Instead of cash off try and negotiate another 12 months on the warranty.

I’ve no idea if they will do that but it may prove much better value than a couple of hundred quid off the asking price.

I bought a used bike ca. £8000 of a dealer.

£50 off, MOT (it had an MOT but was about 6 weeks old), £120 worth of parts supplied and fitted and free delivery to the other side of the country.

I got about 5% off and the first service thrown in, plus a nice loan bike to use every time I brought it back in for a service. Bought outright with no finance.

This was on a new S1000XR that they had in stock.

I needed to remind them about the nice loan bike every time though...
