Was driving the car around noon just going to post some stuff and there was this song on the radio,i just loved it!!
It sounded really 70,s prog like,it was a 'long' song,as in it was playing when i started my journey and the 6 or 7 minutes it took me to get to the post office it was still playing!!
Even when i held on to see what the dj said it was it still didn't end and i had to get on with things.
So,for all i heard it was an instrumental, rock based, weird mish mash of a song,it varied a lot,at one point there would be manic keyboard runs, sort of that early deep purple keyboard sound, then it would slow down with some beautuful, melodic guitar solo work, then it would speed up with a really fast near enough thrash metal beat, then more guitar work etc
The keyboards sounded 60,70,s,but the guitar solo sound was really modern gain sounding??
Whole song i just loved,it was on my local station in Scotland,e.c.f.m and it's not on their playlist?well more accurately the time period it was playing their was a fault on their site!!
Another nudge me towards who it could have been??Long shot i know!

Any chance it might have been Hocus Pocus ? https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=g4ouPGGLI6Q

Or maybe Fanfare for the Common Man https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=c2zurZig4L8

Lots of prog stuff was that long or longer, I'm just trying to think of ones that might be popular enough to be on the radio.

I know those two songs well, this was an instrumental,no vocals whatsoever in it!When i first heard the really fast running keyboard parts i first heard in the song i thought mm,70,s prog, but then the slower parts with these fantastic guitar solos threw me right forwards to the 90,s,it was a real mixup of styles.
If you could imagine a mix of YES,Dream Theatre and Black Sabbath you won't be far of what this song was like,it was fantastic!!
If you put a gun to my head to point down a decade,i would have thought 90,s,with a nod to the 70,s?

The most recent line-up of Deep Purple consisted of Gillan / Lord / Paice / Glover but with Steve Morse on lead guitar.

Now, Morse is a guitar monster with chops very much in the Malmsteen style.

So, four members of the original group that were big in the 1970's combined with a guitarist who was big in the 1990's "shred guitar" era. Just a thought..........

I give up!

I immediately thought of new Opeth but couldn't find any long instrumentals. Eternal rains will come would have been close if not for the singing.

Also wondered about Uriah Heep but couldn't find any long instrumentals. Closest was Uriah Heep - July Morning.

It's a great song too,it really is,this is so frustrating.I've contacted the radio station through 4 forms of social media but no joy!!
It was the tasteful guitar soloing on it was just superb, really clever little parts,it wasn't like just the one solo in the middle, there were two or three, then the keyboard player had his turns.
It was one of those songs i love where it just seemed they winged it just to show their musicianship,no it wasn't Rush! :-)
It was a hard song to pin down to a decade.
Just seemed an odd song to be played on the radio as it was so good, long and an instrumental.
The fast drum parts where the song sped up were definetly modern sounding,as were the guitar parts, that put me off the 1970,s guess, keyboards definetly sounded Deep Purple like in their tone and style though.

Khruangbin?

Most of their stuff is instrumental and they are a 'current' band so good chance they could be played.

Far too light and pop like i'm afraid. This was definetly in the rock/modern prog like genre.I hate getting things like this in my head, drives me nuts.

What radio station was it? Maybe they have a track list for yesterday? Or failing that, email them if it's getting to you that much.

Been there done that, they had track listings per show, and sod's law it says unfortunately they couldn't display the playlist for that time!!
I can't understand why they aren't replying through facebook etc.

Tocatta song im completely familiar with, not that
,and it's rockier than that second one!.
I have a pretty thorough overall knowledge of music over the decades,i had never heard this song before on the radio,it just ticked all my boxes! :-)
The channel east coast fm tends to play the odd 'out if the norm' song,i definetly have the correct channel as i looked at my radio screen,it's a Scottish channel,in Haddington i think.

Ha, excellent.

If this happens again, get your iPhone out and ask Siri what the song is.
I guess Android has similar, and if not, get the Shazam app.
