I have just been run over...

and I can confirm that it hurts like a bastard.

On my bike at a pedestrian crossing. (I know, I know...) get the green man. Roll the front wheel out. BAM! Front wheel gets struck by an older gent in his Escort. I go flying in the air and land on my arse.

Blimey! Shocked to the core I was. So shocked I just can't remember if I really got the green chap or if I just think I did. Old gent convinced it was still Red/Amber for him...

Anyway. Ambulance turns up in moments...off duty copper takes control and then hands over to on duty copper.

All the Emergency Services were fantastic.

I'm not going to cause the old gent any trouble myself...like I say... I can't remember if I was part of the cause or not.

But my advice is: even at crossings look right, look left, look right again and even after that be suspicious...

Its going to hurt like fuck in the morning...ow ow ow.

I can't believe I was part of an RTA. I'm a goddamn statistic. Bugger. Humbling.

bloody hell Don. Glad to hear it sounds like you are not too badly hurt.

I would suggest that you probably did get the green mad and the driver was pushing his luck and miss timed it. Although, as you say you can't now be sure it will always bug you. Shock is a bugger like that.

Get well soon,
Ian

Do you mean Red/Amber was what HE could see,
even so AMBER he should proceed with caution.

What are you doing riding across a pedestrian crossing? Just one set of rules for the motorist and bikes can do what they want.
I nearly squashed one today because he ignored my left indicators and decided to ride up the inside of me from behind as I slowed to turn left, 32ton truck would make a mess of a pushbike and rider. [/rant over]

Yeah I know. Normally I dismount and cross on foot. Today I decided to ride over (I know I know) as there were no pedestrians about. I *was* obeying all the other rules as if I was a pedestrian.

Partly for this reason I am certainly NOT going to pursue any action against the old gent of a driver...he was really decent about the whole prang...

Like I say. Bugger. Humbling.

And very, very sore.

And by no means all my fault - but I'm willing to concede I could have done more to prevent it...

Sounds like 50:50 to me - you shouldn't really be cycling over a pedestrian crossing (although I've done it many times).

What a shame there wasn't a speed camera there to protect you. They save lives you know.

Hope this helps

Reminds me of the time I crossed a road on my bike. One driver slowed down and waved me across. I checked it was clear and started to cross. Person behind the car thatd waved me across blindly overtook and took out the front of my bike as well. didnt stop.

Never take anything for granted on the roads. I was unfortunate enough to witness a fatal RTA in similar circumstance in 1996. The crossing was designed with two crossing points being controlled by a single set of lights. A bus went through the lights on green/amber the crossing lights changed to green man (while the trafic lights went to red) and to my horror the woman in front of me stepped straight in front of the bus and was killed out right

Glad you're ok mate, it doesn't take much to end up as a bunch of flowers tied to a lamp post..... If I were you I'd treat myself to a weekend of expensive food and copius amounts of alcohol

Damn straight. Would you believe when I'm behind the wheel I do. I am absolutely kicking myself at the moment. If I'd just done one extra little check before pushing out all that would have happened is that I'd have had a little swear at the back of a passing car.

Instead I got a highly unpleasant experience and ache like a bastard. My coccyx (sp?) took quite a whack and sitting is a problem at the moment. I think I've learned an important lesson. No matter how smart you think you are you can still act like a numpty. It doesn't matter whether or not one was right its far more important to be alive!

Too right. This weekend I'm cracking something truly fine and having a little "I'm still alive!" party with the wife...

I think amber also means stop, in fact I'm sure of it. Only green means go.

Yes this is true. Amber means stop - unless you are past the point of no return. It would have been Amber for some time when I got struck - if it wasn't actually red.

But I didn't want the old boy to get any more trouble than he'd got already. I suspect he's had a lesson learned too - can't have been nice seeing a fat forty year old flying over the top his car!

Ow ow. Laughing makes it hurt. Ow..

Shouldn't you put a claim in if you've received injuries? They could give you gyp for years to come...

It sounds like the old bloke ran the red from what you described... hope your aches get better.

And how will money help? I utterly despise the whole compensation culture thing. I have not been injured badly enough to require hospitalisation - I cannot have been injured badly enough to need compensation.

I'm not putting the old gent through trouble he does not have to go through.

I can always change my mind if it turns out I need to spend money on physiotherapy - but at the moment I'm just sore.

That and a whole lot of people are a whole lot worse off than me today in London and I don't have much sympathy for myself right now...
