Steering wheel airbags. .
Discussion
So I couldn't decide where to put this so guessing here?!
I am currently converting my racecar back to a fast road car.. all track underpinning but full interior back in.
I'm putting back in the passenger airbag, but what is the law with airbags and steering wheels
Disadvantages etc. .as my current Omp wheel is the perfect size for the car, a Toyota MK3 MR2. The standard wheel with air bag is just sooo big I have to have the seat miles back just to get my legs comfy under it.
If I have to have an air bag I could get it re trimmed with a flat bottom (oh errr) to give me some more room, I'll also be running lower seats which will help..
Of course these airbags are the original and it's a 2004 so whether they actually work is another question...
Cheers

I have no idea, the glib answer is take it for an MOT and see what happens.I am currently converting my racecar back to a fast road car.. all track underpinning but full interior back in.

I was all set to write
"You don't need the original airbag to pass an MOT.
But the airbag light will need to come on and then go out as normal when you start the car to pass an MOT."
Then I thought I'd check and make sure and saw this:
13. Extensively modified vehicles
If a vehicle has been extensively modified or converted, certain defects, such as for components ‘missing where fitted as standard’ should not be applied, for example:
a car converted for competition rally use must have the rear seats removed, be fitted with a roll cage and full harness seat belts, may not be fitted with components such as brake servo, power steering or airbags
a car converted to a stretch limousine may no longer be fitted with items such as curtain airbags or a functional electronic stability control system
This exemption does not apply to vehicles with minor modifications. Therefore, a car fitted with rally style seats, body kit and a sports steering wheel would not be exempt from the requirement to have a driver’s airbag if one was fitted as standard equipment.
Vehicles modified for disabled use must be assessed on their merits. For example, it’s acceptable for the driver’s airbag to be removed for a wheelchair user, but the SRS warning lamp must not indicate a system malfunction.
And so yes, you do need the original wheel and airbag if you have a minorly modified vehicle but not if it's got loads of mods.
How a tester decides what's minor and what's major in terms of mods and where your car falls with respect to each is unclear.
I think this is bonkers, and I used to write this stuff for VOSA!
