Team statement:

Unconfirmed reports that he has sustained several fractures. He’s conscious and well which is the main thing.

Fingers crossed he is okay, was looking forward to his return. Hopefully it isn’t too serious and he’s in the car as soon as he is able to.

Alpine must be over the moon... facepalms all round once they found out he was 'okay' I imagine.

Or worse, a Robert Kubica style injury.

Hope he recovers quickly, but if reports of fractures are true he’s unlikely to make the start of the season. Hulk the super sub again?

That's a bit of a blow, was looking forward to seeing Alonso back on the grid. It's nice to have a few of the old boys mixing it in with the young guns.

I’d imagine Hulkenberg would be fairly high up the list given his affinity with Renault Alpine and his substitution last season. Is his super licence still valid?

Andrew Benson suggesting a broken jaw. That’s a good few weeks/months recovery. Very unlikely he’ll make the start of the season if true.

Conscious and well in himself is good to hear at least. Hopefully we see him in the car and recovered soon.

Anyone asked Sebastian Buemi where he was at the time of the incident?

"conscious and well" would be the obvious choice to allay concern.

"well in himself"? Could simply be an unusual phrase as a result of translation, but it could also be a way of being honest and deliberately non dramatic at the same time.

I'm sure we'll know more very soon. Either way it's not great given the timing.

A broken jaw?

Renaults engine department will be breathing a sigh of relief tonight.

That’s what Andrew Benson is reporting on the BBC site.

Four until testing, Spain reporting no fractures but missing some teeth. If it's a broken jaw I can't see him seeing the first few races.

If it is 6 weeks I reckon he’ll make it. Look at some of the GP riders they race after 2 or 3 week with a broken arm etc I can’t imagine the pain though! I’m too weak

They pull very little in the way of G forces compared to F1 though, if it really is a broken jaw I don't think it'll be ready for the season opener (having bust my jaw in my old BMX days).

I thought better to hold off to see how he actually is first.. But I'll admit I too thought that Alonso without a functioning gob...

Although I suppose he could still demotivate the team via email.
