I've always loved making things. Had the "build your own transistor radio" Ladybird book whe I was about 7, and with my dad and brother made it.

Now a programmer and hardware designer.

Always liked making stuff or seeing how things worked, always liked cars, watched F1 with my dad, didn't think 'working with cars' was an actual realistic possibility for normal people so had no idea what I wanted to do, ended up enjoying software development despite not being a socially feckless hermit and did that for a while and enjoyed being part of a small company and contributing to a product, helping customers etc.

Now work in F1 doing software type stuff and it's brilliant, if I didn't have bills they wouldn't have to pay me.

I am well aware I'm a lucky bd and am very grateful.

I didn't want to be anything that I remember. I went into Joinery as it was easy, did that for many years at different levels, but grew bored of it as i'd done everything, but was eventually left doing just mundane jobs when I was used to doing better ones and I did have a talent for doing the decent stuff. I left during the last major recession (circa 12yrs ago) when work got scarce (the building trade is always first and one of the hardest hit).

Taught myself how to build and tune engines to a high level which I love doing (often race engines), I specialise in two types only so am a bit of a two trick pony.
I prefer to specialise rather than generalise as it's easier. Easier to be an expert at it.
I'm kind of semi retired early in that i'm self employed and work (to a certain degree) when I want, as long as I keep things turning over and bring some money in to survive. I've moulded my work around what my mind and body are telling me they're happy with.
The pay is terrible, but I have no mortgage and no kids which has allowed me to live like this.

if I ever win a decent amount on the lottery that I don’t play, I would like to be a long distance lorry driver, ie driving stuff to Spain and back. Would be an ok job if you could take it or leave it I’d imagine

Didn't have a clue, now I sell cars. Probably no coincidence, but I mostly enjoy my job so it's worked out OK.

Ended up testing railway fastenings in a laboratory. I get to use big hydraulic actuators so not all was lost.

Fatigue is an occasional issue, but I still love doing the job itself.
