Little surprised its dying and have tried conditioning it with a CTEK charger for a couple of days, but car still complains about the battery. Any other options to revive it guys or is it just a new AGM one at pushing £200 DIY - gulp! Does it need 'coding' in to add to the fun? Cheers

Assuming it's the original battery I'm guessing your car has stop/start fitted, but I suspect new battery is going to be your only option anyway.

I bought a 57 plate 1 Series with stop/start in january 2008 and the AGM battery died after 4 and a half years! (The starter motor died after 6 years too, so after that I just turned stop/start off every time I drove it).

The new battery will need coding to the car. Sytner quoted me just over £300 to fit and code, but I got it done by a BMW Indy for around £250.

What message does the car say ?

Mine is a 2015 and seems fine but modern batteries typically only last 5 years

And yes they need coding

It’ll need registering to the car which is a piece of cake with Carly (might be worth asking to see if there is anyone local you can help you out).

Might be worth trying someone like Cotswold. I needed a new battery for my other half’s 125i and after gulping about the original price they could have done it for £165 with delivery.

Thanks guys - if it doesn't get 'coded' what is the issue - just an alert on the dash but will it run fine until i get it coded (and assuming that the new battery is identical with same code for AH etc)?

You can cause it to get overcharged I believe

When you say “complains”, what’s it doing ?

Is the car starting ?

The IBS setting will ensure it will charge the new battery as if its an old battery. That's the bit that needs recoding.

If it is coming up with discharge when stationary warning it can be below a percentage or a drain above a certain amount. I would check for drains, trackers are common problem (mine included). That being said on a ctek it seems to sort it no problem.

It's just shot after almost 5 years guys. Bought a Bosch one for £160 - now to find a mate that will code it in!
