IMO with a lot of remakes they are rubbish, with the above being such a classic I wonder if they should not bother?

Yeah they just need to stop with all these remakes.
Can't think of one that is better than the original.
There's a certain magic with these classics that they will never be able to recreate.
It's ingrained in people's memories from growing up with it.
The original was so fitting for the time and the going from b&w to colour won't have the same sort of effect now.
They could assemble the most prestigious cast of actors and in this and get Nolan to direct it and it still wouldn't top the original I bet.
Get some new ideas Hollywood.

Oh god, can you imagine
"We're off to mumble mumble, the wonderful mumble of mumble..."
The original was a great film when I first watched it, waaay back when. But it is hugely dated now - rewatched it with the Other Half who had never seen it, and the pacing is bad, and the characters are a bit thin/simple. Best to remember it the way it was when you saw it as a kid.
That said, 'reimaginings' often go bad, so who knows.

I’ve never read them, but they’re darker feeling stories than the original film implied... apparently more like the 80s Return to Oz and then another notch again.
I quite liked the one from a few years back... it’d have been genuinely good had it just been a bit darker and a bit more threatening.
It almost felt like no one was ever in any real danger and lost the edge of the final victory.
Maybe the evil witches needed to be a bit more nasty, or showed them doing some nasty stuff rather than just the aftermath of it.
