Ebay...commit to buy.

I thought my laptop had frozen, and in the process of figuring out what the hell it was playing at, I've committed to buying the same thing on ebay twice. It won't let me remove it. So now there's an item I don't want in my basket that I don't want or need, but appear to have no choice but to pay for. Any way around this? Cheers.
I had something similar happen to me once.
You could simply send a message to the seller and explain, they can sort it for you.
Unfortunately for me, they ignored my messages. I chose to simply not pay and IIRC I got a couple of automated messages reminding that I had an item to pay for in my basket. I ignored the messages, then received one telling me I had been reported to eBay for non-payment and it could effect my account.
Nothing else happened, my basket was emptied, and I have used eBay several times since with no ill effect.
So, if the seller ignores your request like mine did, do nothing.
Obviously, if someone does this regularly, eBay will probably suspend your account. A one off isn't going to be an issue.

Can't see the point in it myself. If you want it you buy it, commiting to buy it has no value other than in confusing people that the order hasn't gone through so they repeat the order.

As a buyer its all in your favour, you cant really do anything wrong .
Even when you get a buyer cancels a sale after courier booked and collected they still get all their monies back and you end up out of pocket with the courier charges.
Just go through end saying you wish to cancel the sale. It just might cancel.both though?

Thanks all, spoken to the seller and situation resolved, at least as far as he and I are concerned. There's still an alert on the ebay page telling me to continue with the unwanted purchase, but they can sod off based on the advice on here.

No, but I knew I hadn't. My only concern was whether or not ebay would give me grief for committing ( accidentally ) to buy two, but then just buying one. The seller took payment for the one I did want, and contacted me to tell me that was fine by him. I imagine this happens fairly often, just not to me, so I didn't know what to expect.Just ignore it anyway, the alert will go away eventually.

The seller should cancel it or they are going to end up with fees for a sale that didn’t happen.Don’t worry about it OP.

Unfortunately it was cheap for a reason, and that reason was that it was located in North Scotland and the buyer refused to post it, (I’m in the Midlands). The seller also refused to cancel the purchase at his end.

I done exactly the same thinking it would do the same as 'Buy it now' and take you to the payment page. When nothing happened, I clicked to buy it again without realising it had been added to basket. Ebay tells you the only way to sort it is to contact the seller. Sent 2 emails about cancelling the second purchase and heard nothing.
After the first item showed up within a couple of days and did actually fit what I wanted it to, few the sake of a few quid I ended up completing on the second item to keep as a spare and to end the notifications.

I used that when I got confused buying some grey anti slip floor paint. Where the picture showed a tin of grey, but the brand name included the word black, and the title had the work black. And i'd looked at that many on eBay and amazon, that the price and the delivery was all I was really looking closely at. I was surprised to see the tin was not as per the picture. EBay refunded. I asked for a return label 4 times but never got one, so now I have 2 tins of black anti slip floor paint.
Eventually went to my local engineering supplier, who sold me an appropriate product the same day. And cheaper.
